What triggered the pump replacement?

Sure there is some debris on the filter, but did the pump itself fail?

If so, was it sudden and total failure, or did fuel pressure drop until there was a driveability problem, or did it just get noisy, or was there some other problem?

It started with a slight hesitation once in awhile, replaced coils, spark plugs , maf, checked vacuum system (I was planning on doing all those things at 200,000 miles anyway) and there was no change. It was starting to give me low idle and hesitation when accelerating under partial throttle but fine if I floored it to WOT. Read up on the FJ fuel system and found my problems were when the system went to 12v and fine with 14v. Jumped the resistor and it ran perfect, checked the fuel pump relay and the relay that switches it from 12v to 14v, and the fuel pump resistor all checked out fine. I concluded that my pump was weak and going out or running it at 14v all the time was masking a dirty sock filter. Figured after 200,000 miles and 11 years I would just replace the whole sending unit.

How long was the replacement process? Did you drop the tank, or cut your own access panel under the back seat?

Re: What did you do TO your FJ Cruiser TODAY?

Finally bit the bullet after a 1.5 yrs of no 5th gear and a P0033 Code. Wanted to tackle myself but after some research was told that it's a long and super involved process. Also a significant factor was that insurance will cover it IF it is rodent damage on the wiring harness.
If it isn't and the FJ is taken apart, I'm on the hook for $1500 instead of the $300 deductible.
Can't tell you what a relief it was when the service guy called and gave me the good news.
I live next to a far and have seen rodents running around at night but you still never know until it's confirmed.

P0333 is gone but I have a P0420 error now. Gonna clean the O2 sensors and maybe get around to the MAF as well. See if it makes a diff. It's fairly sporadic anyhow.

Next on the agenda is sway bar bushings and replacing a reverse sensor.

It was like 15 minutes after I did cut an access hole.

I know most people wouldn't do it but I had a full tank of gas when the pump came in (Fairbanks, Alaska) and I dont really have rust but it bas been through a lot of mud and water and 11 years/200,000 miles so chances were some bolt or plastic connection isn't in the best shape to come out without a fight and if anything broke it usually isn't available up here in a timely manner. It's also my DD, so it made sense to me to simply make one more customization to the FJ
