I'm about to try my hand at changing the rear differential fluid for the first time. Seems fairly straightforward. Any pro tips out there? Will I need to replace the gaskets? I haven't a clue when or if they were replaced the last time. Is it going to be a pain without a pump?
Pretty straightforward job. New gaskets will ensure no leaks.

Tip: ALWAYS loosen the fill bolts first before touching the drain plugs.

@FJFool should be able to tip the bottle in the fill hole without the pump. The rear is the easiest of the three cases to drain and refill.

Update: I'll be picking up come this weekend. I've been driving the family minivan around and dreading every moment. If I find time between work, I'll meet some friends at the trails this Saturday.

What trails? When? Who's going? Are you bringing the minivan?

Damnit. I figured as much about the gaskets. Parts stores around here are pretty useless. I generally have to order everything I need online. I was hoping to do the rear diff this Saturday, but it may have to wait another week while the gaskets ship.

Dumb.

Thanks for the tip about the fill bolts. It makes sense the draining will go faster with the fill bolts out. Like shotgunning a beer.

This is actually so that you don't end up with an empty differential and a stuck fill plug.

Well, if the replacements don't make it to me by the weekend, I'll just lube the old gaskets and move forward. I can always put the new ones on next time around.
