Just put it in your will that your family has to spend all the rest of your dough modding the FJ. Bit by bit. Year after year. It can become the Winchester Mansion of automobiles.
Ever been there @CabinCruiser ? It's quite a place. Poor old Lady Winchester was batsh*t bananas. But at least she managed to give San Jose something worthy of attention.

Nope. I'm afraid if I spend too much time in Calfornia, they'll lock the gate while I'm inside.

We do have 30-something prisons here. You'd think we'd be too "progressive" for that!

Re: What did you do TO your FJ Cruiser TODAY?

Well I have one front coilover ready to come out. Installing new front shocks. These have over 100k on them. But I need to take a short break, I am already hurting. But no busted knuckles yet. Had I thought ahead I could have picked up some all natural pain killers yesterday when I was in Colorado. .

While I have things apart I will treat some minor rust. Also I want to have a good look at the lower control arms. These have 120k on them and 100k of that with the lift. I have the fitting that attaches the ball joint to the spindle loose. So far I can't feel any play.

Does anyone have some tips as to another way to check for play rather that just moving things around, pushing and pulling? What did yours feel like when they went bad or got some wear. Or another way to inspect the bushings, other than visual for worn rubber and play.

Thanks in advance.

Changed a couple of rusty nuts for shiny new nuts. These things are 5 bucks a pop at autozone.
The ones on amazon are cheaper but I don't think they will fit as they are 1.46" in overall length and the OEM measures 1.85" in length. They even advertise them with "FJ Cruiser" in the title.

Re: What did you do TO your FJ Cruiser TODAY?

Replaced the OME front shocks with Bilsteins. It went pretty well. After removing the old ones I checked them. They still seem to be functioning, but there wasn't any gas pressure . I installed them at about 20K on the vehicle and they already had a few miles on them. I got some parts from George aka Crazy Hermit 10 years ago.

I think that the ride is better, but it's human nature to want to feel a difference. The FJ has 120,000 miles on it now, and I couldn't feel any play in the lower ball joints or control arm bushings. I was expecting to have to spend $350-400 for new arms and bolts. But that will go for matching rear shocks and other stuff.

I treated some rust and will follow up with more treatment and painting. I am going to leave the skid plate off for now as I noticed a small amount of cracking in the serpentine belt. I will order that soon.

The strut compressor that I bought worked, but not the ultimate. I will modify it in the future to work better. Can anyone identify the design or manufacturing error in this tool?
