Hello everyone. Picked up my first FJ this year and am totally in love with it. Also love this forum. This thread got me thinking a little though and I would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts...

It seems like chrome is a negative to most folks in here, and functionality seems to rule over aesthetics when it comes to mods. The FJ i bought has a chrome bullguard and i am on the fence with it. it appears to serve a purpose - protecting the lights and a bit underneath the bumper. it is bolted to the frame so it *should* provide some protection if it is pushed in for any reason. i have no prior experience with these so i simply don't know.

i do like it (and get lots of compliments, actually) but would have picked a black one and perhaps one with a slightly lower profile. in your experiences would this be something to hang on to? Also those side steps are the next thing to go!

(p.s. does anyone else's wife think they are insane for putting so much thought into these things)
Even when chrome was in in the 80's I didnt go for it. As far as function; I remember another forum member saying something like these are called deductible getters because when they are pushed in they do more damage to the vehicle than would have been sustained if it were not there... I tend to agree.

Yes, my wife thinks I am crazy!

Their resale value holds high because it's a Toyota and that is long term not short term. Look for what other Toyotas are going for, it doesn't always apply to your region or demographics. The higher resale value is based on VEHICLES in production. The buying market has a thing for the newest and bestest, so watch carefully. You could get this FJ for alot cheaper or not, but remember there are others out there and you will learn from this and that will carry you thru life. Trust me on this I know.
New FJs still on sale here & resale values are still high. The reason? It's a Toyota.

Re: What does everybody think of this FJ?

Thanks for the feedback regarding my grille guard, etc.
@tsfarling - not sure if you meant my FJ or the one lowlvlnoob is considering... if mine, would you recommend I drive around with a Large Marge wig while i am looking at options or were you picturing something different? :-)

Re: What does everybody think of this FJ?

To the OP-
Nothing wrong buying the FJ in the link. I don't know why anyone is concerned what kind of lift it has (spacer vs coilovers/springs). A spacer lift wont hurt it. I bought mine with a spacer lift... Ran it for over a year before I got a full suspension lift. (wheeled it too).

And as far as the chrome, it can be removed just as easy as the OEM plastic bumpers.

So unless you plan on buying it and just driving as it comes ( in which you would want it to come looking how you want it out of the gate), none of these things are an issue. I mean if you plan to mod it to your liking anyway, just get any FJ that meets your OEM requirements...then start modding. You take parts off to mod anyways and replace them w/ upgrades.

You'd be pulling the OEM bumper for a custom one, so what's pulling off one more piece of chrome??

I do agree it may be hard to sell the chrome parts... But who knows, some people are into it.

Re: What does everybody think of this FJ?

after using the correct search terms i realized there are existing threads about the grille/brush guards/bullbars vs bumpers in here that covered my questions. thanks for not poking me with sticks.
