Backcountry camping - idiots setup right next to you

Looking for some advise. Was back country camping to get away from people. In a 150,000+ hectare public land use zone

All is good for a couple nights then some asshats decide to setup not 20' from us!? Seriously!?

How does one discourage such behaviour, in an appropriate fashion? Dealing with rednecks here, so their mentality is usually quite limited.

That's a tough one. I've lucked out so far in my backwoods camping spots. If I ever did have campers come nearby they utilized a spot a ways away from me.... and turned out to be great people too.

I would try to talk to them before they are set up and explain that you camped there to get away from people and would appreciate a greater distance between your 2 parties.... maybe tell them they are downrange on your makeshift shooting range...

Suck it up... it's only -40

I have indeed met many nice people backcountry

However we just did not want to see, hear, be around people at all for a few days

I should have approached them as soon as they parked and that's my mistake. Just not always sure how to broach the subject

Other than packing some tannerite for next time . They did complain loudly about the noise my .270 was making but didn't get the hint.

There was one spot I was at that was essentially a quad in or fly-in only spot.... that I got to with the FJ

Sure enough a float plane lands and comes to shore and 2 little heads pop out of the windows and shout "we're going to be your neighbours!".

I was a little put off at first but they settled into a spot out of sight at the far end of the beach and we got to know each other, great people luckily.
It didn't hurt that their kids and our kids ended up being the same age and played well together.
And they only stayed one night.... we were there for 10 days.

I try to be a pretty kind person in life for what it's worth. Just lots of stress with life right now

I'm not kidding when I say they setup 20 feet from us

Ended up coming home a day early as it was too much for my nerves

Thinking of bringing a set of Klipsch Heresy's I have kicking around for next time. And putting Abba / Japanese opera on repeat until they get the hint next time.

I do suck at approaching people in situations like this so more constructive advice is heavily welcomed.

You just have to get out of your comfort zone if/when people approach and/or set up camp near you.... get out and speak with them as soon as possible... with a big smile... and politely ask them to go somewhere else.

Or find a little hidey-hole where you take up all the available space in the little niche and they CAN'T set up near you. We're essentially at that stage now... not much space left at the little beach we go to and there is dense bush all around.
(if you zoom in you can see the little beach)

Nice!

Talking this out I think a noisy smelly generator pointed out in the direction people may setup next to us may discourage them enough to keep moving

As is we were pretty tucked away

I'm about as redneck as the next guy. I wouldn't set up next to you but if a guy approached and explained I was too close I'd move on. Might throw some beer cans in your site first of course...

Bring more .270 ammo next time, and some paper targets.
