Loud howling sound

Ok I finally got an FJ. Today was my second day driving it, and on the way to work it started making a really loud howling sound. It didn't make the sound at all yesterday. It comes and goes, only seems to happen when I'm on the throttle, some times it's higher pitched. Then it just stops for a while and it comes back some times loud and sometimes really low. No big shaking or metal noises or tapping. just the weird howling. Any ideas?

Re: Loud howling sound

I test drove a bunch of FJs never heard any of them make that noise. Is the wind noise really that loud in these?

Re: Loud howling sound

Agree with @ttfjc . Any mods/accessories/lights on the outside? I've tried two LED light bars in two locations and each configuration made it's own type of obnoxious noise. It started whistling again last weekend so I'm afraid I may have lost some of the edge trim I put on the back fins to eliminate most of the noise.

what are you used to driving? i have always driven trucks and suvs so im used to it. wind noise is better then tire wine

the FJC is about as aerodynamic as a brick. cross winds can make weird wind noises in the roof rack.

Re: Loud howling sound

Yeah it has a 40" light bar on the front and a smaller one on the back.

I have a nissan Armada with a roof rack that doesn't make noise. If everyone agrees it's wind, then it's probably wind. I'll turn the radio up louder.

Re: Loud howling sound

Could it be the windshield top trim? See this thread: https://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...dshield-2.html

Re: Loud howling sound

I saw that thread when I searched. But the noise is not coming from the front.

Where does it sound like its coming from? I first thought mine was coming from underneath near the front skid plate, but it was the windshield trim.

It wouldn't hurt to rule it out by putting a long strip of blue painter's tape over the seam and see if the noise changes...?

Re: Loud howling sound

windshield trim
roof rack
rear differential howl
wheel bearings
skid plate flutter at speed

Probably need to check a number of possibilities out and not assume it is wind noise from roof rack. What roof rack are you running?
