Buying a FJ - Advice on under carriage rust

Hi guys!

After 10 years of dreaming about getting an FJ Cruiser, I finally have enough money to pull the trigger on one. I found one out of state (Texas) that seems in pretty clean condition...except for that under carriage rust. I had the dealer send me a couple of photos, which I've attached.

How is the condition? Is this treatable once I get it back to Los Angeles, where the car will live? Or too far gone? I am not an expert with cars nor FJ so any help/advice would be appreciated. Besides the rust, it's one owner, low mileage. Will pull the trigger if the rust is just surface and can treat.

Thank you!

Also apologize for the weird upside down photos. It's oriented correctly on my computer!

Looks like surface bits to me.... and a WHOLE lot better condition than mine

It shouldn't take much effort to rectify that bit of rust.

What rust?

Truth be told what is showing in the pictures is pretty minor and an afternoon of elbow grease will take care of that.

Re: Buying a FJ - Advice on under carriage rust

Ahh you non rust belt folk, This truck is at least 10 yrs older than your FJ spent all of it's life in the rust belt with no rust maintenance and will probably still be on the road another 10 yrs... long after most FJ owners sell or trade in their FJs. Rust is a slow killer and if treated/ maintained doesn't have to be a problem. I would say if you did nothing your FJ would safely last at least 15yrs or more.... But definitely clean it up best you can and treat it.

BTW it looks like you're missing the front skid plate...

LOL. That is zero rust. But I agree, see if the front skid plate is somewhere. Maybe they left it off when they changed the oil. It can be a little pricey

Re: Buying a FJ - Advice on under carriage rust

Yeah i called the dealer about it and he said the car came into the dealer without it. He said the same thing -- sometimes the oil change guys will leave if off but he thinks it may have happened with prior owner.

I 'm assuming getting a front skid plate is another thing I need to get when I get the car.
