Re: Worst ABS brakes ever.

I'm glad to hear others are having this same problem. It's already happened to me about three times in the month I've owned my FJ and I thought there was something wrong with mine or my driving! I nearly rolled into the middle of a busy intersection one time because the ABS started freaking out, the pedal dropped to the floor and I just kept rolling.

Any chance for a recall on this?

Tire pressure! That might be it...

The difference I explained in my earlier post happened after I increased my tire pressure from 33psi to 39psi. Interesting...

So...
...pulsating non-effective brakes at 33psi.
...super sensitive brakes at 39psi.

I'll try dialling down to 36 and see what happens.

Re: Worst ABS brakes ever.

That is an interesting observation. I normally run 35PSI cold and have not really experienced the problems that others have had. Well at least not exactly.. I have had the FJ pedal go low and the porpoise effect a couple of times, but I was able to get off and then reapply the brakes.

Coming from Jeeps the FJ brakes are awesome. Took me quite some time to learn to brake without smacking the wife's head on the headrest.. LOL.. She didn't like that much as it messes up her hair

On my Rubicon's you could smack the entire weight of foot/leg on the brake with no effect at all. To actually stop from speed, it took at least 75lbs on the pedal..LOL.. Ron

I have found that in my FJ the issue your reporting, is directly related to tire pressure. If my tire pressure is over the vehicle recommended 35psi, then I have this happen starting at about 40psi. It significantly worse at 45psi and above.

At 35psi... it has NEVER happened I tested quite a bit.

Not defending the braking system, just pointing out a possible cause, and less dramatic fix then disconnecting an integral part of the FJ's braking, and stability features.

I had it happen once to me with my tires at 35 psi. But I was going too fast for what my intentions were anyway, then I tried to stop quickly on a road made from potholes on top of potholes. I ended up turning into the parking lot way faster than usual. I got a little wheel squeal, but everything worked out for me.

Re: Worst ABS brakes ever.

ive had this happen a couple times on the trail on the dirt, i would go for the brakes, abs would kick in and i would roll a little bit further scaring the crap out of me, feels like theres no brakes at the moment, they need to do somehting about this.

No. All stock. I sell FJ's too and it's the same in ALL of them.
