Bought a used OEM "brush guard" today, it took me less than 5 mins to put it in... the brackets are WEAK!!!!... I feel like I can rip the ting off.
Im going to make my own brackets to beef it up

Re: to beef up brackets for stock brush guard

I have an OEM brush guard, and it is as solid as a rock (actually saved my hood from some serious damage). The brackets under the hood are a bit weak, but between being bolted to the bumper, and the brackets under the hood, it is really solid. Are you sure it is installed correctly (I am not trying to be a jerk)? If you didn't have an OEM brush guard before, you would have had to cut holes in your bumper cover in order to bolt it to the bumper, and that would take more than 5 minutes (I am ASSuming). The reason I say this is I replaced my bumper cover, and it seems to me you would have to remove it in order to drill the holes.

Re: to beef up brackets for stock brush guard

I got the OEM brush guard from a guy whose FJ came with it from the dealer. I personally removed it from his vehicle which took about 20 minutes without removal of bumper cover. I went straight from his truck to mine with no modification or removal of the bumper cover in 5 minutes installing it in the exact same way it was installed on his truck. I did exaggerate with the comment about ripping it off but does yours flex if you pull on it?

Re: to beef up brackets for stock brush guard

It has no flex whatsoever. What I was talking about with the bumper cover is that if it does not already have the holes drilled in it, you would have to remove it to do so. I would ASSume that if your FJ did not come with the OEM guard, that the holes would not already be there. It just sounded to me like there was the possibility that you only attached the brushguard to the vehicle with the upper brackets, and not the two bolts that secure it to the bumper. There should be the two bolts that secure it to the bumper, and the two bolts under the hood.
