Rear Headrests on Backwards

This may sound odd but I got one of my rear headrests on backwards and cannot get it off. Does anyone know how to remove it? If I can't get it off, I can't lower the seat, thanks for any advice.

Yeah I did the same thing. I ended up asking the dealer to remove it since I was there for something else. I can't remember but I think they stuck something small down the hole to release the catch. You can push the button all day but it won't work. If you take off the opposite side you can get a good look at how the mechanism works and you should be able to get the stuck one to release.

Re: Rear Headrests on Backwards

I'm glad my rear headrests are resting comfortably in a closet in my house. This is odd though since I know Tacoma headrests don't have this problem (at least my 08 didn't). They go in backwards just fine and come out by just pulling it back up. You don't even need to push the button. Let us know what you find out, I'm kinda curious now...

Re: Rear Headrests on Backwards

This is weird, I put mine in backwards all the time (’08 FJ) to fit my daughters car seat in, and have never had a problem getting them back out. Even when they reach full extension, just push the little button and out it pops.

Re: Rear Headrests on Backwards

The clearances are very tight for the head rest post...if you are pushing in the button (which probably is not necessary anyway), it should come out.

Apply more muscle to it.

Re: Rear Headrests on Backwards

I have tried most all of your suggestions, I will try to shim something down to release the catch. It's not on the "button" side that is the problem, it is the other side that won't release. I have really tried to work this and it is getting frustrating. Will take it to a dealer soon.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Re: Rear Headrests on Backwards

i think the proper way to do it is to take out the headrest on the side that is in correctly. look at the plastic headrest mounts in the seat backs. on one side (the side without the button I think) you should see a little hole. now on the side with the stuck headrest use a paper lip or something to push in that hole and you should be able to remove the headrest.

think of the proceedure like getting a cd out of a CDROM drive, lol

I think the OP works as a lead mechanic at the toyota dealer where I bought my FJ!

Mine are stuck backwards also, because of carseats. I am going to try the paper clip trick when I get home tonight.
