Re: New from the TJ side to the FJ

No, no additional price. I think I got a pretty good deal at $11,000 with 150k miles. 6spd manual with 3" emu lift, BF tires, and FJ slush mats with premium sound upgrade and off road package. Has aftermarket exhaust but not sure of the type. Have not spent a lot of time underneath it yet. It pulls to the right when stopping so will have to get an alignment soon. Other than that no leaks but there is a odor of gear oil at highway speeds or downshifting. Any suggestions?

Re: New from the TJ side to the FJ

pullling while braking suggests stuck brake calipers.

Gear oil smell at highway speeds or downshifting ...you need to get under there and look. Is it engine oil leaking, transmission oil, transfer case oil, diff fluid? Hard to say. But you might inspect for leaks and then see if it is traveling down the drive train onto exhaust etc.

Might want to drain/refill transmission, transfer case F&R differentials to ensure the proper fluid/amounts have been used.

If i were to hazard a guess....possible valve cover leak that is getting onto exhaust manifolds and/or exhaust...that or leaking gear oil from front diff or trans case and getting onto hot exhaust parts?

Thanks. Going to finally get under this weekend and inspect closely. There have been no visible leaks on the ground when I park anywhere. Will keep you updated.

Are stuck brake calipers a common occurrence with these trucks?

spend some time on the Jeep forum and you will be amazed how trouble free the Toyotas are in comparison (purely from an anecdotal perspective).

Couple things to keep in mind:
1) people coming to forums for advice on problems are self selecting (e.g. not a random sample of the entire universe where it can give you an idea of the overall likelihood of experiencing problems).
2) Toyotas and other Japanese autos are not maintenance free and will experience problems if not properly maintained. We generally have no idea on the people coming to the FJ forums inquiring about issues if their vehicle was properly maintained prior to them purchasing it used.

I have a 2010 FJ with about 52K miles. Never had any sticking caliper issues, but I see the topic pop up from time to time. Do a search for it on this forum or in google and you can investigate further on some of those threads.

Yes kinda common. Its not a huge issue but tends to happen at higher mileage. 4runners with the same brake components do it too. At 150k it gets more likely to occur. My '07 with 135k is just barely starting to pull to the left when braking, suggesting a stuck caliper. I'll have to replace it one of these days. It would help to do a thorough bleeding of the brakes to flush out any contaminated fluid which is likely to have caused it.

I know I know, still ironic though...
