Just Purchased First FJ - Came with K&N Performance Air Intake

Hi Community - as it can be seen, this is my very first post. I just purchased my first FJ Cruiser yesterday. It is a 2011 Trail Teams in Army Green with Convenience package and TRD upgrades. Very nice and all but the previous owner put in a K&N Performance Air Intake System (K&N Part 77-9034KP). To avoid MAF problems and possible engine longevity issues, I am looking to return to the stock air intake system. A few questions I am wondering about before the attempt:

-Is engine longevity actually an issue with these systems? If so, would it be better to replace the K&N if the system has been active for at least 20,000 miles?
-How expensive would the stock assembly alone be? I was hoping someone had the stock components I could buy used, rather than searching part-by-part to fill.
-Would taking out the K&N parts not only cost for parts and labor, but require a system recalibration?

Re: Just Purchased First FJ - Came with K&N Performance Air Intake

Welcome from Oregon

Engine longevity is normally not an issue. How many miles on the FJ? (Love Army Green, I don't see a picture).

As for the K&N somebody else can comment, mine is still stock. If somebody else does the work (and doesn't work for beer) you'll have to for sure pay for parts.

Might find some used OEM parts on here, Ebay or Craigs List.

Good Luck,
Lee

Hey - thanks for the reply. Definitely looking to pay, more asking if anyone has done a similar job for a reasonable price since I can't seem to find a quote on the disassembly of the K&N and reassembly of the OEM with parts included. Also wondering if - with those considered - it is worth it or I'm sweating over nothing. Mileage is around 140K. And let me throw in a picture for good intro post measure.

Re: Just Purchased First FJ - Came with K&N Performance Air Intake

As a farmer for 53 years and responsible for multiple engines over the years I believe you are being overly sensitive to the K&N add on. I put one of those on my '95 F-250 diesel @ 100K miles and it had 398K when I traded it for my 2012 FJ. The only thing I had done to the engine during that time was a water pump; nothing to do with an air filter. I feel the oil impregnated filter is a much BETTER filter than a plain paper filter. My FJ came with a TRD air intake very similar to a K&N and except for a roar when you really get on it you really don't know that it is there. cas

Keep the intake but get a dry filter to replace the crummy K&N oiled filter? AFE makes some nice ones.

I would look at the junkyard for the stock assembly, I imagine it would be pretty cheap. These are all easy parts to replace, you could do it yourself with basic tools.

Here's a quick video on YouTube. Looks pretty straight forward. If the engine is running good and you are not having any warning lights I think I'd leave it be.

I'm sure there are opinions about that setup but for the expense I'd leave it be. I'm SURE someone would trade you their stock setup for the K&N Probably come over and do both FJs at the same time (for beer) BTW, where are you located?

I'm with you on this. I've used K&N since their beginning on many types of vehicles with great success. The failure to be smarter than the filter oil may be why people have problems.

Re: Just Purchased First FJ - Came with K&N Performance Air Intake

Don't worry about the k&n. Get the cleaner and lightly oil it and you'll be fine. The TRD filter is just about the same setup as the k&n. The idea being it's reusable instead of disposable. These type of filters will clean the air just fine so long as you keep them clean you're good.

Re: Just Purchased First FJ - Came with K&N Performance Air Intake

Welcome.

I don't have the full K&N box but I do run the K&N filter in the OE airbox and have done since my FJ was new in 2014. There are lots of debates on here about it. I think the issues occur when it is over oiled.
