Test drove an FJ...and now I'm looking for one.

Hi everyone! I have been driving myself slowly insane by going on multiple test drives for SUVs. The problem being that many are too small, most are too big and far too expensive...and they have way too much creepy and expensive technology built into them in my opinion. I started test driving ($)4Runners first thinking they were the only SUVs that Toyota really made to go off road then I saw something that caught my eye.

Then driving into town about two weeks ago I see an interesting...SUV-looking thing sitting in a used car sales lot with an affordable-ish price on it. I really liked the look and know two people who have FJs. This one is all white and has some serious off road tires on it so I stopped by and test drove it. This was an old fashioned test drive where the salesman made a copy of my driver's license and gave me the key saying "Take it out and see if you love it! Let me know how it was when you get back." The people I know who have the two FJ Cruisers stated they will never sell them and even then not over their dead bodies. I knew Toyota fans were this loyal but I just didn't get it.

I was shocked to see that there is a rear view camera in the rear view mirror and I adjusted the seat and mirrors. In short it was a tight spot to get out of and it was so NIMBLE! I was able to take it down a typical city street and execute a TWO-POINT TURN. I mean TWO-POINTS people, not three plus point turns in your typical off road beast! I was literally able to just parallel park this sucker in an area where I can't do this with my old small Chevy SUV. I was so shocked with the tight steering, the responsiveness and best of all the lack of any technology that wasn't necessary. The suicide doors are wonderful and the cargo area size is nearly perfect plus it CAN TOW my stuff when I move! The rims on this one aren't stock and the tires are too aggressive for typical city driving. Since I have no experience with an FJ Cruiser myself I have since been looking up every little thing I can and while I'm seriously annoyed Toyota discontinued them I'm so glad I found this one and got to test drive it!

Don't get me wrong the 4Runner is pretty amazing but the FJ Cruiser really wowed me. I don't own it but I'm seriously saving and looking. I will consider the one I test drove but I'm nervously saving and biding time to get it taken to a mechanic for a thorough inspection since it has over 100,000 miles on it. The underside of this FJ looks considerably better than the 4Runner I last saw and I have learned how to work on cars and SUVs so that doesn't scare me at all. I just don't want to buy a project.

Welcome.

Don’t worry about 100,000miles, nothing for an FJ so long as it has a good maintenance history. If you want to post pics and questions we’ll all be happy to help with your queries.
