Re: Tellico update

Yes, the SFWDA lawsuit was voluntarily stopped, but we are not in the clear. The Forest service must still decide on a plan of action. When they come out with the several proposals we must make sure they know what the 4 wheelers bring to the table as far as the responisibility for the trails and income to the area.

Re: Tellico update

We did agree to dismiss the lawsuit without prejudice. Basically, that means we can bring it back later if they still don't make good decisions. The lawsuit was meant to either 1) get the trails reopened (which it didn't) or 2) force the FS to do as the law says and to go through a real process to determine what will and won't work there. Finally, they stepped up to the plate and we are expecting a document out in the next few weeks.

Once they release the Environmental Assessment (EA) we will have 30 days to comment. And when we say comment, we need REAL comments. Things that are substantive and that make sense. Letters that say "I like it at Tellico, please don't close it" won't help us. So keep that in mind when you comment on the EA.

Also, we are currently working on a few things to help our case. They cost MONEY...and lots of it. So if you are willing to help and can, please consider donating to Rescue Tellico. We just committed to spending about $30K on some work and we sure could use some help paying for it and for the lawyers.

I guess my point is that we are not giving up. Please go wheel Tellico...it's still a lot of fun and we need for people to get out there and show support.

Re: Tellico update

I did not know you were on this board. I will let the pro handle it- Thanks for all you do!

**EDIT- somewhat new to this board- don't spend much time here. Going back and looking at this section I now feel silly for not noticing. Just wanted to get the word out. I'm ready to write some letters!

NO, NO...please continue. I often don't have time to sit down and write a bunch of stuff out. So if you see things and are keeping up, please do me the favor of posting things up.

Thanks!

Re: Tellico update

Scratch that Christmas plan. Latest copied from over on Pirate with Political opinion edited out:

I stopped by the Rangers office this morning and tried to get some information as to when the proposals will come out for comment. I was told that it would be Mid January because of the administration change in Washington. They also stated that the head honcho at the top of the Forest Service would also be out of a job. This basically means that the new folks will have to see everything all over again and decide if the proposals fit their plans as to the direction they want to go.

Re: Tellico update

Just as an update- apparently we will be waiting until Feb for the proposal. For those that follow Tellico, the winter closure is again in effect due to a carefully worded previous plan. Also, anyone who can attend should plan on Spring Fling in April when the seasonal closure ends. A big event and a great time.

Tellico EA due out Friday, Feb 27th

Get ready, it's comin'!

To summarize, the EA will be out (released to the public) on Friday. Southern has been asked to attend a meeting where they will summarize their findings and their alternatives. We will be attending.

To combat their science, SFWDA has been working behind the scenes and paid for our own analysis and has developed our own alternatives. THIS IS WHAT YOUR RESCUE TELLICO MONEY IS PAYING FOR.

Our study is meant to give us good solid standing for our comments to the EA. It is also a short and long term maintenence plan for the area. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE USFS HAS FAILED TO DO FOR 10 YEARS. We decided that if we are going to keep these trails open, we were going to have to do their jobs and take matters into our own hands.

We will be posting our study up on Southern's website (Southern 4WD Association) as soon as we can too.

So it's time folks. Get ready...we'll report back as soon as we know anything.
