Radiator flush and spark plugs?

Should spark plugs be changed by time or just mileage at 105k?

Additionally how about radiator fluid? What frequency or time should it be flushed?

Thank you

Re: Radiator flush and spark plugs?

i believe this is all in the owners maintenance manual that should have come with the vehicle. I wouldnt change the plugs until over 100K miles. It's not like metal and ceramic are perishable like a rubber timing belt due to time). I believe the coolant change interval is 8 years....so you can save that for next year. Of course nothing stops you from opening up the radiator cap and having a look-see and if you dont like what you see, you change out now.

Re: Radiator flush and spark plugs?

Spark plugs are every 30k on the pre 2010 models. Since your FJ is a 2012 they changed the spark plugs they use and they can go for longer durations. 100k IIRC.

Coolant is supposed to be every 100k also.

Of course things could have changed by 2012, but the items that I received when I bought my 2010 new were:
  • Owner's Manual (436 pgs).
  • Quick Reference Guide (21 pages). Basically a quick guide for people that don't read owners manual.
  • Owner's Warranty Rights Notification (56 pgs).
  • Warranty and Maintenance Guide (64 pgs). This contains the maintenance interval information and has maintenance logs, etc.

EDIT: just looked it up in Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Coolant replacement is 100k miles or 120 months (not the 8 years I had specified). Spark Plug change interval is 120k miles or 144 months. This is for my 2010. I suspect 2012 is exactly the same as 2010.

Re: Radiator flush and spark plugs?

I usually try to stick to the recommended intervals. Somehow the plugs in our 2007 FJ slipped by us until a few weeks ago. About 110K, and the plugs were original - different brands on different sides as it came from the factory.

We had no driveability problems, but the gaps were HUGE - probably triple the spec. It does idle better - I had to relearn that I cannot feel the engine running at the stoplights!

Coolant done years ago.

Thank you so much. After reading your thread went through the car front and back, and found all the paperwork hiding in the seat pocket behind pass seat!!

So I will shoot to change the plugs and radiator fluid at 100K.

Trans was changed last year. Diff/Transfer case I will try to do it now, as been doing that every 30K.

Re: Radiator flush and spark plugs?

I change my plugs every two years and I drain a gallon on fluid and refill with new fluid every year
