Re: Mean Green

Can you post up some more picture of your RTT and baja rack? I'm really interested in getting a setup in the spring. I would really like to hear your thoughts on it, good and bad (if any). Thanks again, you have a great rig!!

Re: Mean Green

I like the RTT. I have only used it three times, but am really impressed. It stays warm, is easy to deploy, easy to take down as long as it is sunny out. If it is cold and or can't heat up the vinyl cover in the sun it is hard to get back on in the morning. I have had to not zip the cover and just use the straps to keep the cover on until it warmed up enough for the cover to be able to stretch a little more and zip up.
This is the 2nd Baja Rack I have bought and I really like them. The only complainant I have with this Expo rack that I have is that it is 3 pieces, but the new ones are all one piece. Also on the first one I bought (standard baja) had a little wind noise but I called Baja and they send me out a foam piece that solved the problem (at no cost by-the-way). Their customer service is awesome!

RTT Pros and Cons
Pro's:
Easy to Deploy and take down (in most situations)
Comfortable - I have never slept so well while camping
Roomy
Expandable with Annex
Sense of security being off the ground
Keep sleeping bag and pillows in tent
High "Cool" Factor

Con's:
Higher Center of Gravity - I can notice a difference on the trail especially in tippy situations
Takes up a lot of room on the rack
Hard to take off and put back on - This thing is heavy at least a two person job and safer with three.
I can't get the FJ in the garage with the RTT on.

Here are a few pics. I don't seem to have any of the inside and the RTT is off for the season.

With Annex - I have not used the Annex camping as it has just been me and I haven't need any extra room.

Re: Mean Green

Reworked the rear cargo box and added a MPAC Pet Barrier. The fridge just barely fits between the pet barrier and the MPAC rear door cargo rack.

Re: Mean Green

You beat me to it. I was thinking of getting a pet barrier for when I put on tube doors and the rear tube door so everything didn't fly out the back of the fj. Also need me a shotgun. What kind you got?

Re: Mean Green

Hey Sherlock!

Super nice build!! Love that last edition with the way the whole rear of the truck works together. How much would you say you drawer/ fridge slide weighs? Looking at a similar route only looking to use this material. Looking at removing the rear seats and making the whole back a flat storage deck (dont have an RTT so it might double as sleeping space too).

ABS Plastic Sheet Textured General Purpose Haircell Finish

Might be lighter than Baltic Birch but unknown at this point.

Edited- OK just read your build on the box- 130 lbs- still not bad for what it does Like the unfinished look at the back too.

Remington 870 Tactical. You can shot it when we go up to Baldy if you would like.

That would be my guess, about 130 with the fridge. It takes two people to get it in and out the back of the FJ.
I also am trying to securing it differently this time. I have bolted the fridge to the sliding tray. So far it seems very solid but I am going to add a tie down point so I can through a ratchet strap on it when I go on more difficult trails.

I also wanted to remove the rear seats and make a level platform, but the Misses vetoed that idea. Something about we might have people riding in the back seats at some time. I hate to say this, but she might have been correct. I have used the rear seats more than I thought I would have thought.

I like the looks of that ABS. I'll bet it would save a lot of weight. I just used whatever plywood was at Home Depot not sure what type of wood it is.
Not sure if you have checked out Expo Portal but they have a lot of rear cargo boxes people have built that will give you a ton of ideas.

Re: Mean Green

I will take you up on that Mike. I have been looking at mosberg 500 here lately. Just never had a need for a shotgun.
