Modding Blackie, the cheap and cheerful guide to modding

Time to mod!

I love seeing build threads. Some guys here are amazing! I am not one of those guys. I am pretty mediocre and CHEAP!

I bought Blackie, a 130k miles, 2008 FJ for less than $15k.
This thread will chronicle my additions and modifications. I'd love to do a 3.5" Total Chaos Long Travel with Kings but unfortunately I am not in that financial league.

So I'm going the other route. Seeing what I can do for less. Doing as much as I can by myself and buying what I need and not what looks good. The goal is to have capable rig that will be fun to ride and take me to most places around here.

So here are the planned mods (in no particular order):
1) Rock Sliders DONE!
2) Skid Plates
3) Level DONE!
4) 33" Tires DONE!
5) CB Radio DONE!
6) HAM radio DONE!
7) Bumper
8) Winch

Here she is in all her hail damaged glory:

Leveling springs (instead of dem spacers)

Price breakdown thus far:
Rock sliders: $21 - $17 for bolts (Damn McMaster - ripped me off!) and $4 for paint.

CB: $60

Hi-Lift (Big-Red actually) Jack: $40
Hi-Lift mount: $5

Tires:
285/75/16 Cooper ATP: $643 (including install - on sale, naturally)

Front Springs: $170 (OK, I splurged here a little)

Nice looking rig, and a great price! Keep an eye out for old timers selling their suspension. I'm getting my king coilovers with the adjuster valve, plus read king shocks and spring and total chaos uca for half the price.

When you go to level the truck I would go a had and spend a little extra and not do the spacers. Check on getting 5100's or if you can afford it go with a Toytec lift. Nice score on the FJ.

2010 TTE with Toytec Ultimate lift, Resz Fabrication front bumper w/12,000lb winch and lightforce lights, expedition one rear swing out bumper, demello sliders, gobi stealth rack, RCI skids, bushwhacker flairs, Spidertrax spacers, BMC, trd exhaust, afe cai and tb spacer, 17x10 Level 8 bully pro's with 285/70-17, Midland handheld CB with Bandi mount and Fire Stick antenna, FJoel AT shifter and Grenade for the 4WD shifter, 1/2in. Bandi body lift, windows tinted, and AMSOIL fluids.

Can't wait to see what you do here. Probably hard to believe, but I'm all about the cheap mods.

Based on your list, I think you'll be good to go for most Colorado trails.

Donít be afraid to use your rig! Dents can be popped out, scratches can be buffed out, but in the end the memories you have make it so worth it!

Re: Modding Blackie, the cheap and cheerful guide to modding

I should have written:
1) DIY Rock Sliders
2) DIY Skid Plates
3) DIY Level (Plan on machining the spacers and bump-stop extensions)
4) DIY 33" Tires Install and Balance (Yes, that too)
5) CB Radio (Hmmmm.... OK, I'll buy this. But I'm going CHEAP!)
6) HAM radio (I might splurge on this one. I do SAR so I want a reliable nit for this)
7) DIY Bumper (A-ha! Going for a lot here.)
8) CHEAP Winch (Chinese probably)

I'm going to record the cost of each. The challenge is going low!

Are you planning on doing all the fab work yourself?
