Brake Lights not working.

The brake lights are not functioning, the brakes are. I believe the brake light sensor is working because the FJ cannot be taken out of park. The back running lights are functional, so I think there is a problem with the wiring. There was a tow package crudely installed and I have removed most of it. Not sure where to go from here.

Thanks Sanderhawk, good advice, I changed all the fuses out with new ones.

Double back and check every wire you touched removing the old trailer harness.

Re: Brake Lights not working.

If the brake lights don't come on, and the transmission shift interlock won't release, then the problem is most likely the brake pedal switch just above the pedal. These are not expensive or difficult to replace.

But do inspect the botched trailer wiring carefully anyway. Why someone would hack something in when the Toyota tow package harness kit is available is beyond me.

Re: Brake Lights not working.

FJ-6MT, that was it!

In 2011 andyknas and Anita Farley-Guynes described how to repair the brake pedal switch, I followed their suggestions and it worked!
