I posted this question in another thread and I didn't get any answer. So, I create this thread to have a quick answer because I'm doing the tire rotation this friday.

Need info or suggestion!

4900 miles ago I bought four 285/70/17BFG AT KO tires and now that I'm near to the 5K I do not have the money right now for the 5th tire (spare). It is possible to do right now a 4 tire rotation and for the next tire rotation (10k) start doing the 5 tire rotation with any problem?

I have a Manual transmision Full Time 4WD.

Please let me know.

Thank you!

You've got to do what you've got to do. If you can't get the 5th one now, you'll still have to do rotation so the question is really a non question :). Do the rotation now and re-evaluate at 10k. If no significant difference at that time, then add the 5th one into the rotation.

I agree with Fjamming. it is what it is...throw it in the mix when you buy it.

... or just keep the stock spare there for good and save yourself the extra money of hanging a bigger tire back there at all. Another way of looking at it is like a lot of cars today...they have normal tires on the ground and a tiny doughnut spare in the trunk for temp use only. I have four 285/70/17 tires on the ground and one 265/70/17 on the back for temp spare use. I just rotate the four and that's that... I'm sure that doesn't work for some, but it works for me.

Good luck.

The amount of wear in 10k should not cause a problem. When you get the 5th and rotate it will work out.

A lot of people don't include the spare in the rotations they do. Others include the spare. Rotate the 4 you have and don't worry about it. Work the 5th in later or don't. It isn't going to add to / diminish the life of the tire(s). You'll be fine.

pnc 69, I suppose what you could do also is to look for a slightly used one. If you don't mind just using it as a spare, there's no point in using a 5 tire rotation. You could save quite a bit if you were able to find a decent used tire of the same brand and size for a spare.
