I've had a Cobra 18 WX ST II sitting around for almost 2 years and finally installed it yesterday. It works okay and is-what-it-is...but, I'm not real impressed.
Anyone installed or have experience with one of these Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB CBs? Aside from the obnoxious beeping anytime a control is actuated it looks nice.
I've searched the web and found some good reviews, but only 1 post here.
I'd like to install it in the dash under my stereo the same as the Cobra. If anyone else has one, I'd appreciate some installation/performance advice.
Tym,
I wrote a review on it here. I have been converted! The beep can be annoying but it isnt that bad. I love the thing and think it out performs the cobra 29 it replaced. I have learned how to peak and tune it and have gotten great results with it on AM and SSB. The thing is just loaded with features and it just plain looks good. I mounted mine overhead.
PM me and I can tell you where to get the best price on one of these.
Yes, I read your post, it's what got me looking into it.
I think your mounting point looks badass. I'd put mine there except I've installed a overhead so I don't have the space. I'd like to put it in the dash, I think it'll fit. The stereo slot is pretty wide, I'll just have to trim a little.

Weak signal strength mostly. I first thought I just didn't tune the antenna properly, until I had a comm buddy check it out. He pretty much laughed at it, so I took it out of my Tacoma and forgot about it. It wasn't until I got the FJ mod bug that I decided to stick it in the dash under the stereo. It worked ok, I just don't 'really' know enough about CBs to explain it.
I toyed around with replacing it, which lead to this thread. I actually did a fair amount of research and decided to look into a radio with SSB capability. I got pretty close, but in the end I never upgraded. The guy who bought my FJ a couple of months ago asked me if I wanted to keep it (he wasn't fond of it either). I'm guessing he just chucked it in the trash and put something better in.
If you're looking for a basic trail CB with a SHORT range, you'll be fine.
I just bought this bearcat yesterday, although I don't know hardly enough if anything about CB's to give a proper review. If Vegas_Nick thinks its BA then you cant really find a better review out there on here lol
Here is a good video of the 980 out of the box. I had my radio tuned up by this guy and I checkout his youtube channel every now and then. He has a basic before and after peak and tune video just recently posted of a 980 SSB.
You'll have to click the blue box with the link above the video.
I also fell in love with the sweet little 980 because of the good looks and sexy SSB, but after hearing those annoying "beeps" everytime it is "touched" decided to find one a little easier to put up with.
I installed mine recently and, though I've only used it a little at Summit, it worked/works extremely well. I installed mine on the passenger side of my MPAC straddle... it seems convenient enough, but after having my passenger accidentally rub his pants leg against it and change the channel on more than one occasion, I'd recommend a little better placement. Other than that, I have no complaints, though I was hoping to change the color as has been mentioned above.
