Re: I can't believe I'm asking this but - thoughts on the 2019 Wrangler?
Jeeps ride like crap, and they love to break down.
A friend has a JK with the pentastar engine. It runs fine, he's got a moderate lift on it, and reasonable tires on it - it's fine offroad.
There is less space inside than an FJ. to put any meaningful weight on the roof means an exoskeleton type thing for the rack. The fuel tank is miniscule, and there's no space to put a larger or second tank in there (get used to carrying jerry cans). There's no space under the hood - so forget mounting your compressor in there - it's going under the passenger seat.
He drives his carefully and so it's been pretty reliable - he's done about 80,000 miles, and he's only had to replace the front axle tube and diff once, and the engine has only been rebuilt twice. He's been lucky on the AC as well - just had to dismantle the interior of the vehicle only the once to replace the evaporator.
My FJ has done the same mileage, I don't have to carry Jerry cans, I only recently bought a stock rack, and I drive it like I stole it - every time I drive it. I catch big air off the top of those giant speed humps, and I speed up for the small ones. I wash it at least twice a year, and have it serviced every 10,000 kms. It's never let me down - ever.
If i ever crave getting kicked in the nuts, I might consider buying a jeep, but until then, the FJ is just fine.
As a side note - I was driving with my wife yesterday and she swore as a car in front of us braked and swerved violently to avoid a dip in the road. She asked "why does everyone do that - it drives me nuts!" I told her it is because if they don't that dip will shake their teeth out, to which she replied that she barely feels them - I said it's because she drives a Toyota, and it's designed to just work without any drama. she looked at me like I was speaking gibberish - she's been wanting a nicer car for a while now, so I said that she can have anything she wants, but she should think about how many times her friends have been left on the side of the road by their "nicer" cars, and how much they moan when it's away for 2 or 3 days to get serviced (hers is done typically while I wait or run some errands).I asked how many times her "ugly" car has let her down, and she said never. Thinking about buying her a new Prado, but I wonder if I can get a deal on an LC200 V8... She'll hate it of course, but I know it'll never let her down.
