this just in Tesla 3 explodes after collision with truck (while using autopilot) (snip)
Love that media hype ... "explodes".

Ever seen what happens when a tire finally fails during a vehicle-on-fire incident?

Or when an aerosol can of hair spray or spray paint vents in the same situation?

Were there loose plastic containers of gasoline or diesel fuel aboard the tow truck that ended up on or under the Tesla?

Wait for the Rivian

Yeah the Rivian looks interesting.
Biggest challenge initially is going to be parts, service, warranty out in the sticks. Range will be something that will be dealt with.
Wait until Toyota bring out an EV offroader...

Lithium batteries burn vigorously, but a wholesale explosion? No.
The Tesla batteries are made from many, many small cells, and have some pretty clever isolation for safety, monitoring, and charge leveling.

actually damaged cells will explode.. have u ever put a aaa battery in a fire... Boom... the problem is once u extinguishe the fire.. the failed cells acid will degrade the remaining cells causing them too explode one by one.. Richard Hammond of the Grand Tour (formerly Top Gear) crashed a Rimac electric car. they put the fire out again an again.. but the car burned for 3 days!!!!!!! as remaining cells exploded in a daisy chain...sensationalize that...

Yeah. Lithium button cells in the fire is almost as exciting as throwing shotgun primers in the fire.

Re: Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

I love new tech/toys has much as anyone else... Spending $$ on a computer/camera/tablet that will be obsolete in a few years, who cares.
- Spending good $$ on a car/technology that's not quite there yet... No thanks.

Beside, the closest Tesla dealer is at least 5-6H away, and there are no charging stations (nor electricity) at the lake...

-

If you're a city dweller, with a good daily commute, and plenty of disposable income... I guess there are worse ways to spend your $ than buying a Tesla.

If you know what you're doing, you are not learning anything

Re: Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

The best reason I've heard of for buying one is if your commute involves stop and go traffic jams on the highway every day. Put it in autopilot and read, and let it creep forward a few feet at a time, at a walking pace, for 10 or 20 minutes at a time, then resume control when the flow resumes, or when you've crept up to your exit.

Sounded kind of like the ideal solution for anyone crazy enough/unfortunate enough to live somewhere where that was a normal daily experience. It also would be the only time I'd ever trust a machine to drive (creeping forward in a traffic jam).

Regarding batteries burning, as pointed out fuel is just as explosive but we know how to deal with it so its rarely an issue and when it is we generally all know what to do. After a while batteries will be just as well dealt with, but the media will have a feeding frenzy in the meantime, as that is its bread and butter.

Re: Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

You will rue the day you let your FJ go.

Like a boat, the happiest days for owning an electric car are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

I have given rides to 2 different Tesla owners that ran out of juice in the last couple of years...

But hey - you do yours and I'll do mine. But I promise you are getting the short end of the trade you laid out!

I wouldn't buy a Tesla. I'd consider a Rivian pickup though - in addition to the FJ, but not for a few years until the battery tech & prices mature some more.
I'm kind of tempted to get a little EV as a runaround though. They go like sh1t off a shovel and they're easy to park around town.

amaclach and CabinCruiser like this.

Go ahead, skin it! Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens...

I'll ride in on a sunny day, Sing you a song, steal your heart away Like a cowboy Hang my hat like I'm here for awhile Kick off my boots and drive you wild Like a cowboy Well baby you know I can't stay long You wake up, I'll be gone Until then I'll hold on Like a cowboy.
