Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

Help! Iím seriously considering trading my Ď14 FJ for a Tesla Model 3. The value of the FJ makes it so I wouldnít have to pay much more for a Tesla Model 3 (AWD Long Range). The FJ is my only vehicle, so Iíd save ~$200/month on gas from my daily commute, but thatís not the only reason. I love new technology, and being one of the first to test new things. Iím most interested in the speed and tech, and not so much the ďreducing my carbon footprintĒ piece.

On the other hand, I love my FJ. I havenít had as much time lately for any off-roading/camping, so I could probably get by without it for daily tasks. Iím just afraid Iíll regret selling the FJ and I wonít be able to find one again.

Interested to hear if anyone else has contemplated the same thing!

If you can, buy a cheap commuter and save the FJ. Unless you are pretty sure about not offroading in the future.

Re: Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

Buy a clean, used Corolla or Civic as your daily driver, and save the FJ for weekend and special-trip use. In truth, an FJ is definitely not an ideal commuter vehicle, and really not the greatest daily driver.

But then again, if at this point you don't recognize the uniqueness and utility of the FJ as an off-road, exploration, and overlanding specialty vehicle, maybe it would be best to trade for a Tesla, and pass the FJ on to someone who would appreciate it for what it is.

A 2014 FJ in N. America will always hold special cachet (and value) as "the last of its kind".

If you get the Tesla, be sure to keep marshmallows in the back so that when it spontaneously combusts on you, you can at least make s'mores.

That is a good question. Everybody seems to think you just plug it in like your toaster, and nothing else changes.

I saw this the other day. It seems for a frequent driver (job plus usual stops and out one weekend day), the electricity cost might be as much as $325 a month, for $13 times 25 nights of charging. We have no electric car, but we have never had a $200 electric bill either.

Add $1000ish for the home charging station. If you have sufficient capacity - if you have a 100 amp breaker box, you MIGHT be adding the cost of a new box and supply line.

I have nothing against electric cars in principle, but I do believe in actually counting the costs.

I`ll never own a electric vehicle. If I want to drive 500 to 1000 miles a day I don`t want to have to stop every 100 to 200 miles to charge my car. What a drag

Re: Need Help - Considering Trading FJ for Tesla Model 3

I saw an interesting study that looked at different areas of the country and compared an electric car to a gas one in each area to determine which was better for the environment. Electric cars take a massive hit in the beginning due to the mining of rare earths and construction of the battery. Then if you live in a state where most of the electricity comes from coal plants, you do more harm to the environment than if you were burning gasoline.

I think electric is the obvious future for cars but they are still a long ways away from where they need to be.
