Oil leak...?

Hi all,

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what is making this mess? My oil is still showing full on the dipstick, and I'm not leaving puddles, but I'm not too happy with what I see here:

`08 FJ with 200,000km on it.

Thanks.

Re: Oil leak...?

I haven't look to see where it could be coming from but judging by the rusting I am guessing this is a coolant leak. Looks like the back side of the engine, possible heater hose or maybe a frost plug... Just guessing as I have not looked at this part of mine close enough to know the possibilities. But I think coolant from somewhere.

Re: Oil leak...?

All levels were good, but oil was down a little as far as I could tell on that POS dipstick. I put some paper towel under there last night and there was about a quarter size drip of what certainly looked like oil there in the morning. I cleaned it up (it wasn't rusted, just a crappy under the car cellphone pic in the middle of the night) and changed my oil from the synthetic I was running to some high mileage stuff, hopefully that helps, if not, hopefully I can see where it's coming from now that it's cleaned up. I'll let you guys know, thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Oil leak...?

I have the same leak, it's the rear main seal. Taking mine into the shop on Monday for the repair.
How many miles on your rig? I have about 150000.
I'm hoping the seal on my rig didn't harden and cut a groove in my crank shaft. If that's the case theory will have to put a sleeve on the crank shaft and then install the new seal.

You could clean it up and go buy some uv dye. Toss that in your oil and get a black light flash light. Drive around for a couple hundred miles and check the leak again.

I will post some pictures of the repair on my rig Monday.
