Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

I thought that might happen. My FJ shuddered like a mutha with a bad torque converter but it never did it for the dealership when they drove it. In my original post I was thinking it "felt" as if it was right under my feet (front diff) and that I might need to check fluids. I'm running M1 synthetic in there and I just changed it 5000 miles ago. The reason I ruled out the fluids is because the only time mine does not vibrate (slight feel in the steering wheel and gas pedal, not a shimmy but a vibration) is when I make a right hand turn at speed (think off ramp curving right at 40 mph), so I was thinking it definitely was in the wheels.
I was kind of hoping that you would be able to shed more light on it today
Sorry nothing was done Steve, and sorry about your rap sheet

Exclamation Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

Hello all!

I am so glad to have found that I am NOT CRAZY!

I blissfully drive a 2008 FJ, 2WD that has only been driven on the highway and in the city...no rough driving at all and I have not been able to take her to the mountains yet, so, she really has been babied. Everything I have on her is stock. I live in New Orleans, and the only real extreme temperatures we have is during summer due to our high humidity. I just turned 35,000 miles. Roughly 6 wks ago, I noticed a humming noise and slight resistance coming from what seems like the tires. It becomes very audible at 30 mph, and ridiculous at 70 mph. When I steer L/R, it stops completely, as well as when I press the brake pedal. The resistance almost feels as though I am driving in 3rd gear or something...the vibration can be felt in both the accelerator and brake pedal as well as the steering wheel. I have checked all my tires for wear and made sure the air pressure was up to par. I am bringing it in tomorrow morning - and I swear, I will hitch-kick someone in the face if they try to tell me nothing is wrong...I was thinking bearing failure, but I am not sure...any thoughts?

Thanks - Happy Driving!!

Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

My FJ is in due to the same symptoms. At speed letting off the gas the FJ feels like it is experiencing driveline resistance and there is a humming noise that changes with speed. It appearrs it is improperly wearing gears in the rear differential, it will be covered under warranty with a new build.

My FJ will return on Monday and will update you all on the final outcome.

Hello all! Just an update...finally brought my FJ in...told the guy I thought I had bearing failure in front passenger tire...he condescendingly told me it was probably just tire noise because they need to be rotated as he painfully stifled his laugh. 3 hours later, he had to call and tell me that I did in fact have bearing failure in the front passenger tire and that he ordered the part which would be in the following day...I love being right!

The putz had the audacity to ask me to give him a good review on the follow up survey...surely you jest sir...I'm just a stupid woman...what's a survey thingy????? LOL.

so, beware of this failure...I have heard it is common in FJs now

Happy Trails!

Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

Iím having the same problems, resistance and humming. Iím scared to take it to the dealer because who knows what is wrong and how much it will cost. Has anyone had these problems figured out and if so what is cause and fix?

Dude! I have the exact same problem with my toyota 4-runner. Can you let me know what the dealer told you? [email protected]

I posted a similar question about this a few days ago. It seems that when I am driving around 40 mph I feel a little resistance in the drivetrain and it is more noticeable after using 4wd. I also feel the vibration in the gas pedal/floorboard. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy but now I'm seeing more people experience this. I took it in to the dealer and set up an appointment but would rather wait until I have a little more money in case they hammer me.

Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

I just replaced both bearings on 2005 4Runner due to humming noise. Actually it was the passenger side bearing, i thought driver side in the beginning lol. Replaced that one first, then passenger side, no more noise.
The symptoms were: Humming (mud tire alike) noise from front end, starts at approx 25mph and stays. When i turn right at speeds over 25mph, noise changes to different tone but doesn`t go away... when turning left, noise disappears during the turn and comes back once wheels are straight.

This is how pass side bearing (bad) looks like:

Hope this helps

Wow! I wonder if there a lot of bearings that got swamped in the tsunami. Only saltwater can tear it up that bad!

I Kidd, but then again it makes you wonder.

Re: Resistance and Humming Noise while driving???

Did you have the dragging and resistance as well? And changing the bearings did it? If so, how much you think to replace?
