Re: Grand Canyon/Lake Powell/Escalante National Monument

You are describing a huge area. Give some more details on your route and I bet we can help. Many of us know the area well.

Here are my favorite semi public places to camp in that area (not necessarily on the same trip due to distance):

GC North Rim
Toroweap
Twin Point
Kelly Point

Glen Canyon
Alstrom Point
Hole in the Rock Rd/ Left Hand Collett Rd
Cottonwood Cyn- Hole in the Rock Trail (make sure to read up before going- black diamond + trail)

In the vicinity of where you seem to be going
Comb Wash
Texas/ Arch Cyn
Paria Cyn
Willis Creek

IMHO I would not camp at the top of Moki, great views but not great camping area. Find a nice spot in Valley of the Gods instead.

Re: Grand Canyon/Lake Powell/Escalante National Monument

So, to narrow it down, we will be going to 4 corners (quick stop), we have campsites booked at Grand Canyon (Mather Campground), Lake Powell (Waheep Campground), and the Zion National Park (Watchman Campgrounds). This was all booked in the past month and I had forgotten to update.

Re: Grand Canyon/Lake Powell/Escalante National Monument

Here would be a few alternate ideas:

Consider the North Rim of the GC. Alot less people, better views and cooler. You can camp right on the rim in many places.

Zion- the CGs are crowded. You could camp up on Gooseberry Mesa for free.

Powell- never camped there because there are SO many free and pretty places nearby, Alstrom being one of them.

Well, our trip is almost over and we have had fantastic weather. Lake Powell is a great place for swimming and slot canyon hiking. We went to Big Water to take the National Park Service Road, however, it was washed out a ways down and we had to turn around. I still have the stock tires and it was grey seabed clay with about 30" of flash flood water running over it and no winch so I didn't chance it. We found a BLM center nearby and then drove down to the beach camping nearby that had OHV space. Took the FJ up some sand trails and it just tore through it in 4L. Drove on a few other BLM roads in New Mexico and Arizona but mainly spent our time camping and using the FJ as our transport. The drive through Zion was incredible! We hiked the Narrows while we were there then went to the Grand Canyon. We hiked the 6 mile round trip on the Bright Angel Trail. The FJ came in handy when we went through a storm leaving the Grand Canyon, in NM last Sunday, and today as we came back in NM. Flash Flooded roads had the FJ getting an early bath before we hit the road tomorrow. Here's a few FJ photos

Re: Grand Canyon/Lake Powell/Escalante National Monument

I'll be in Sedona the end of this month. Since the wife isn't a camper, we are doing some day trips to the GC area.
One of them is Diamond Creek Road from Peach Springs down to the Colorado River.
I'll be doing some trails one day in and around Sedona, IE: Broken Arrow, Soldiers Pass, etc.
If anyone is around that wants to play hooky from work during a weekday (25th - 28th Aug) send me a pm
I'm thinking Wednesday for the drive into the GC and thursday or Friday for wheeling around Sedona.
