RTT and shark fin satellite radio antenna

Just wondering if anyone has a roof top tent and a shark fin satellite radio antenna. I would assume the reception would be very poor,if at all.
Anyone deal with this? What did you do?

Thanks in advance

Re: RTT and shark fin satellite radio antenna

A shark fin wont wont work for satellite radio . You would need a high gain patch or panel antenna atleast 10 db gain. A shark fin antenna isn't designed to handle microwave frequencies. The most that you can get out a shark fin is in the range of 90 to 108 mhz thats the FM range.

I had made a PCB based antenna which works quite well. I can send you the diagram and design if you need.

PM me your email and i will send you the complete details.

Cheers

Re: RTT and shark fin satellite radio antenna

Thanks Subzero

I think the factory installed XM antenna is the shark fin located on the roof near the back.
I will soon be installing a Columbus Variant roof top tent and I am sure that it will cover the factory satellite radio antenna. I have searched and cannot find the location of the factory installed XM module. I would like to unplug the factory installed satellite antenna and install the magnetic type antenna that normally comes with an after market stand alone XM radio kit.

Can you or anyone else tell me where this module is located and If I have to remove any panels, how to do this as well

Thanks again

Barry

Take a look at this.
FJTTSE posted a pic of the factory mounting location and a link to the install pdf.

I have the flat magnetic one just a few inches in front of my AirLander tent, and reception is great.
The only time I loose signal is being blocked by a building, but nothing more than before the tent was installed up there.

Thanks, that looks like too much work for me to take everything apart and hope to put it all back together! lol
Maybe it is just less worry to take it in to a shop and let them do it!
Thanks for the info and picture.

I have installed these magnetic antennas before on a coupe of vehicles I have had before and they work great and easy to route the wiring and mount the antenna anywhere you want, but the FJ is the first one I have owned that had XM factory installed, and need to replace the factory satellite antenna somehow

Just an update..
I didn't think the satellite radio would receive a signal once I installed my RTT, surprisingly though there is no difference in reception if the RTT is on or off the FJ
