Polk MMC 6500 Crossover Setting (0, -3, or -6 db)

Running Polk MMC6500's in your FJC? If so, what crossover setting did you use for your MMC6500's (0, -3db, or -6db)? Also, what other speakers are you running and where?

Re: Polk MMC 6500 Crossover Setting (0, -3, or -6 db)

first off, that setting is completely dependant on the install and listener. it is something that you should start off with at 0db. listen, if it is too much tweeter, go to -3db, then -6db if necessary. if the tweeter is in the dash, you might actually be at -6db depending on the rest of your system.

i run a set of 6.5" zapco reference mids with the comp tweeter. mid in the door (which is matted like crazy) and the tweet is in the dash. i have a matching set of 5.25"s for pods in the rear, whenever i decide to make the pods.

Re: Polk MMC 6500 Crossover Setting (0, -3, or -6 db)

I was hoping for some responses from people who actually have MMC6500's, and other Polk speakers maybe in the rear pillars.

This is because I'd like to compare the brightness of the 0db MMC6500 compared to maybe some 4" db401's which aren't adjustable.

Anybody have this setup or something similar?

This will also depend significantly on other factors such as amps, gains used on amps, if you drive with windows up or down.

You will generally find the 4" speakers to have very limited dynamic range. I have not heard the model you are looking at, but typically you will expect to get 80% of your output from the front vs the rears anyways. I would follow Briman's advice.

True, I agree about the 80%. But I'm still hoping to actually get some data from another forum member (or two) who has the MMC6500's installed. Anyone?

i have heard lots of sets of them, but none in an FJ. all the sets have been in boats. and even in the same boat, they can sound different. it is so dependent on install.

...So you should be able to characterize the MMC6500 as brighter than, say, DB401's, when the crossover is set on 0db. Can you give me some indication?

I would say the db's are brighter, but the momo's sound a lot smoother and more natural.
