Tablet Mount

I've seen alot of tablet mounts and wanted one for some time, but I felt like the forum lacked in depth pictures of the installation. So... I decided to take some decent ones when I did it myself.

For the mount I used

RAM Mount Samsung Tab A with case tablet holder

Ram ball mount

Ram medium arm

Used small bolts along with a washer and nut to fit from Lowes. Best bet is to take your mount and try all the ones they have.

Got sheet metal from Lowes also don't go overboard on this as it can be done without if you use decent sized washers. If the sheet metal can hold it's own weight when moving it then it's fine.

And I got a samsung tab A 10 inch from bestbuy along with an SD card for downloaded maps.

I'd be happy to help anyone with any questions. Hopefully the pictures might help you if you decide to take the route I did.

If your confused on where the radio and trim clips are theres a youtube video on it if you search FJ cruiser radio removal.

I didn't have my dremel and was worried about nicking something so I used a drill. No one, but you will see it anyways.

Doing it the right way could take an hour or so depending on how far back you mount it. Using a cutting tool for the plastic will dramatically speed it up also.

Re: Tablet Mount

Did you use a hatchet or a small axe for cutting the hole ? Just kidding. Once installed it looks good, how steady is it when driving?

Haha yeah didn't bother cleaning it up. Figured it was just a waste of time and would make a mess to smooth out. It's very sturdy and I could tighten it more if I wanted to. Only motion I get is side to side and that's because of the ball mount on the tablet not because of the FJ to ball mount itself. Vertical motion is what would makes things hard to read for me anyways. It has already saved me some trouble as I did an atf flush myself and needed it to keep track of my tranny temps. I've already found myself watching youtube on it waiting in parkinglots. Haven't yet had it offroad, but pennsylvania isnt know for its smooth roads and I can yank on the thing and it doesnt move. Shes also already taken a few knee hits and a seat belt without moving too...

Re: Tablet Mount

I have had no issues at all. Recently used it on a long trip and it got me there and back.

I recently installed an IPad in my FJ. I found an item called Magbak. It’s basically two adhesive magnet pieces that stick to the IPad. It comes with to strips that the Magbak attaches to. I recessed the factory radio and placed the strips it the opening and above. The IPad stock to those perfectly. No drilling of any kind. The IPad sits in front of the radio. I connect the IPad via Bluetooth to the stock radio. It’s the 2018 IPad with the 9.7 inch screen. It’s been great so far. I have driven on really bumpy logging roads and the IPad didn’t move a bit. I’ll post some pics of my setup tomorrow if anyone’s interested.

Here are some pics of what I did. You can see the IPad is flush with the dash. You can also buy Magbaks for iPhones. These also can be used in an IPad mini which would fit better in front of the stock radio. I wanted a little bit bigger screen so you may be able to tell but the bottom just covers the cabin circulation and the A/C buttons but no big deal. The Magbak is actually designed to be attached to the edges of the iPad but I needed them to be more towards the center.

Also to recess the stock radio I cut off the front quarter of the stock mounting brackets and moved the mount to the forward set of screw holes which recessed it quite nicely. Also on the bottom magnetic strip the weird stuff in it is some super glue I used to try mounting it a little differently. The piece doesn’t come that way, it’s my fault. So if you order one it will be nice and clean.

Hey patriot, can I ask what length arm did you use on your mount. I love this setup and ordered a tablet and ball mounts. Just need to know which arm to get. Thanks for the great idea.
