Running 12v to a camper to charge battery

I have a camper with a battery that is charged from the FJ through a 7 way plug at the hitch. I want to only charge the battery when the ignition is on, this will save my battery on overnight stops etc. So I'm going to go from the battery to a relay of some sort that is triggered by the ignition, then to the hitch electrical. So my question what type of relay should I use. I'm thinking one like I use for my aux lights but would like an expert or someone that knows more than me!!

Re: Running 12v to a camper to charge battery

I would suggest that rather than a standard relay you install a constant duty solenoid. Most RV stores have these. They are also used on some P/U trucks with a second battery installed. They will handle many amps for a long time.

And yes I agree with you wanting to wire this so that it only powers the RV battery when the FJ is running. So the solenoid should be powered off the acc or ign circuit, or thru a switch that you control.
