Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

Was changing oil yesterday and saw grease blasted all over under the passenger side A-arm and rim.
Did some inspecting and saw that the retainer clip for the boot on the front CV axle, nearest the engine (not the outer one near rim) was missing and the boot slid off slinging grease everywhere.
Not sure how long it's been like that, but at least 2 weeks.

Is this something I can just 'repack' with grease and re-clip and kep going on, or do I need to replace that axle?
I think I saw that they usually run around $130 for a new axle; $300+/- installed.
Part of me thinks I will have to do new regardless. Truck is an '07 with 197000 miles on it, with a 2.5" lift.

Thanks for thoughts/experienced opinions!

Re: Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

AWESOME!!!
I'll check for them and maybe get a full kit for both sides and just replace/repack them all.
I assume just regular axle/bearing grease, maybe a synthetic equivalent?

Also somewhere on this forum someone has the part numbers for the thinner clamps for marine use that you can buy one at a time. Do a search its cheaper than the kit. I just used the regular MOLY B that I got form the local parts store.

Re: Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

Oh my gosh, I remember that post!
Good ol Bandi!!!
I was thinking something really similar actually while watching some vids on 'repacking CV boots" online.
I am thinking even if I did replace the whole axle, I would still switch out the bands to prevent this from likely happening again. Which I bet it gonna!!!

Re: Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

You can get the clamps from southeast overland but the cost plus shipping is a bit unless you live in NC. Try McMaster Carr, i know they carry them.
How many miles on those cv's?
If high, i would just replace all four boots and seals. You can get the toyota boot kits from Pure FJ for half the cost of dealer. So get TWO! Change out the seals in the diff as well and you good to go. Rock Auto has the seals.

Re: Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

Was wondering about the diff seals as well.
The rig has 197,000 miles on it, which was partially why I was wondering about just replacing the axle all together.
I'll go check out Southeast and McMaster to see their prices and all.]
Replacing the boots isn't a bad idea either. Then again, once you get into all of that, you gotta wonder again: is it simply worth paying the $300+ to have the axle replaced entirely?

THanks for the help and sources man!

Re: Lost retainer clip on front axle CV.

Yup. Sure enough they have a kit that includes the grease for inner and outer CVs, and replacement bands. I think I may get the ones Bandi had used to really ensure that the same issue doesn't happen again, which I am sure it will.
$35 plus shipping, not bad. Rent the needed tools from the guys up the street and it looks like a fun weekend tear down project.
