REAR DIFFERENTIAL ISSUES on FJ 2007

Greetings fellow FJ'ers
I need your help
Can you give me feed back if anyone else is having this challenge
About three/four months ago I started hearing a metal to metal grinding in the back
After inspecting the back differential the oil was horrible it was almost water very dark/black
Changes the oil took it for a test still noise
I have heard that the makers of the differential part was made out of soft metal therefore creating the spider gears to be defective and now I am afraid it will lock on me
What I am asking is has any one heard if this is a recall out there that I can print up and take to the dealer and tell them to change it free of charge
Your input is so greatly appreciated
Cheers
Delia

Delia

There were some differentials in 07 that had this issue. They were early builds.
How many miles on your cruiser?
If you want to take it to a dealer, I can recommend one for you.
Camelback Toyota
Eric Murphy is a service manager there. I can't seem to find their regular number but, here is the toll free number 1-866-789-0430
Tell Eric , Don with the FJ sent you. He is wheeler friendly and is a member of the Copper State Cruisers Club locally
and a really nice guy
thanks
Don

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL ISSUES on FJ 2007

I sure hope that '07 wasn't still running the factory gear oil.

I did an initial gear oil change at only 1,200 km and my rear axle gear oil was already black. I followed up with back-to-back rear axle gear oil changes to flush everything out using a cheap 80W-90, then refiled with Mobil Delvac Synthetic 75W-90

My '07 barely has 60,000 km on it now. I got into the habit of changing the rear axle fluid twice a year, everything else once a year. From the initial change, the front axle and transfer case stayed clean

Several weeks ago I did the routine gear oil change. Front axle fluid looked new, along with the TC fluid, so I think I will now stretch it to every two years.

Rear axle fluid also looked almost new. Think I will stretch that to a year and see what happens.

In particular, for the FIRST time there was nothing on the drain plug magnet. Either that is one hell of a long break-in for a rear axle, or maybe something has changed inside

My rear axle had a slight "hum" from the factory. After the initial gear oil change the hum went away. The axle is very quiet

The dealer couldnt figure out what it was,so they replaced the whole rear end on mine just before I bought it.

Sometimes when I'm alone,I Google myself.

Re: REAR DIFFERENTIAL ISSUES on FJ 2007

I have a 2007 FJ with 82,000 miles no off road use. I am quadraplegic I use lift on back hitch for my mobility scooter. About 5,000 miles ago heard grinding from rear took to auto repair said was likely bearing in rear diff, got 2nd opinion a good transmission shop he thinks teeth in rear diff. Took to Toyota in Corona CA, says rear diff will need replacing not covered Part alone from Toyota $1400. Help, where do I go from here. I am very dependent on this vehicle. Service manager said no rush will likly last a year. I only drive about 6,000 milles per year now.

You might get lucky searching car-part.com and/or by calling Chase at ECGS. Both of these options are for a used 3rd but it should be significantly less than the $1400 dealer quote.

Sorry to hear about the rear end giving the classic symptoms of failure

Just curious how often you had the gear oil changed?

I'm anal enough that EVERY vehicle I have ever owned, I have done early initial servicing of the gear oil. Even the power steering fluid. Learned that from my dad

I changed all the gear oil in my FJ at around 1,200 km, or under 750 miles

I was quite shocked to discover the rear end gear oil was already BLACK with heavy metal particle buildup on the drain plug magnet. In contrast, front axle fluid looked new along with transfer case fluid.

I followed up with frequent servicing of the rear end, usually twice a year. The rear end didn't "settle in" until the last year with around 32,000 miles on it.

But I will still change the rear axle fluid twice a year
