Poison Springs Wash Road In Garfield County …

... looks like an alternate route into the Maze area of Canyonlands National Park. The road heads East about 17 miles South of Hanksville. There appears to be a ford across the Dirty Devil, and the road continues (if one can cross the Dirty Devil) through Sunset Pass into the vicinity of the Flint Trail and the Maze. I’m looking at various maps I have. Has anyone done this route? Would an unlifted FJ with 33” KM2s be able to do this trail?

I just came back from this approximate area a few weeks ago (the La Sal / Moab area), and enjoyed it quite a bit. I’m planning another trip out there perhaps middle of May 2013, and trying to figure out some good areas to explore. This desert area and the Henry’s interest me because its remote, and I like that. Being as I live in extreme, extreme, Eastern Utah (Pennsylvania), its hard for me to just casually check it out!

I’d appreciate it if anyone has any info on this route!

Fred

Personally I have not been on that route, but I say you should be fine with what you have. If you want to learn more about that trail/area head over here... Expedition Utah ...there is a lot of information/trip reports available on that area as well as the rest of Utah and it's neighboring states. If you want remote, check into the San Rafael Swell area, it is one of my favorite areas in the state.

Hope that helps...kinda...

I've never been in that exact vicinity but do know the dirty devil can rage with red water in the spring but that doesn't mean there's no crossing either. Google Earth it for sure if you haven't already. The Hanksville area is loaded with archaeological Indian sites and a lot of outlaws spent time in the area too.

I'll see if that exact trail is listed in any of my Utsh backcountry books...

Found this. Sounds like it can be sketchy or impassible at times..it says its the only motorized route that crosses the dirty devil in the area...

Re: Poison Springs Wash Road In Garfield County …

Thanks Fly Jester and Smalldog. It looks like an area worth exploring even if the Dirty Devel is impassable. Found this on a jeep forum. Lots of good pics ...

Utah----Remote Poison Springs Canyon Utah

I'll check out the other links to. Was planning to explore the San Rafael Swell area too. First saw that on my first trip accross the country in 1975, and haven't been through there since. Drove by on I-70 and it looked awesome.

Anytime! If you are on I-70 again on this upcoming trip, don't miss Black Dragon Canyon. It's literally right off the freeway. Awesome pictographs (of course one is a black dragon) with a cool little wash trail to tool around on.
