Polaris debuts airless 'armored' tire on new ATV - MSN Autos

I remember first reading about these like 10 years ago.

Yeah! I saw this on Werd.com (or similar "cool stuff" site)... I'm surprised they made it to market! It's a really cool concept, and this seems like a good way to try it out in real life.

Like the Lead-acid battery, the rubber/pneumatic tire is a concept that works, but seems like it's time to take a look at... haha
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but after 100 years of the same thing, sometimes it's time to push the envelope, even if it's just for progress' sake. who knows what you'll come up with....

I think the idea is awesome, but I'm curious about what happens if you take this thing through wet mud that isn't very viscous...which is where lots of people drive atvs. Seems like the openings would just suck up mud like a sponge, then your wheels would take on an additional 50 pounds each. Or is there something to prevent that from happening?

Street applications would be a better fit IMHO. But the concept is cool.

^^^I think it would get in between and that may actually be a benefit because it may help "scoop" the mud and add a "paddling" effect to keep you from getting stuck

Wouldn't mud get captured in all the voids and screw up the balance?

I have to think that the centrifugal force would throw most of it out. Tires seem to distribute it evenly enough to not usually cause a problem, right?

I will say that the thought of gunning the throttle on an open road to clear the mud out of the wheels sounds like a ton of fun.
