Will AR Mojave 16" fit my Offroad package stock tires? (aka how to read tire size)

I need some help figuring out how the tire/rim sizing is spec'ed out.

I'm thinking of getting American Racing Mojaves to replace my stock Offroad package 16" rims. I know the rims will fit the FJ but I want to use the tires that came with the off-road package wheels until they wear out. Will the tires fit these rims?

Rims: American Racing Mojave (16x8, 6x5.5") AX39816838

Tires: Offroad package BFG Rugged Trail (265/75R16 7J)

Any comments/pointers to sites where I can figure this out myself will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Will AR Mojave 16" fit my Offroad package stock tires? (aka how to read tire size

yes the tires will fit those rims.
How to read metric weird tire sizes.

265/75/r16
265 is 265mm. This is the tread width. 26.5cm. 1inch = 2.54cm So, divide 26.5 by 2.54 to get the tread width in inches.
75 is the sidewall is 75% of the tread width. So, say the treadwidth is 10.4" , than the sidewall of the tire is 7.82inches.
r16 means a 16inch rim.

To get the diameter of the tire in inches. add the rim diameter + (2 times the sidewall)
So, say my side walls are 7.82 inches, than, 7.82 + 7.82 + 16, so a 31.65" diameter tire. However, this may not be the exact size of the tire just because the math is right. a 265 sized tire from one manufacturer might actually be closer to 31" tire while from another it might be closer to a 32" tire, FYI.

Re: Will AR Mojave 16" fit my Offroad package stock tires? (aka how to read tire size

Thanks, layonnn; that helps a lot.

So if the rims are 16x8, there should be no problems with a 10.4" treadwidth, correct? I guess the "bulge" at the middle will account for the wider treadwidth and the narrow rim width.

My next question is how wide of a treadwidth can the 16x8 rims accept? I mean can I put a 285/70R16 on the 16x8 rims. I realize there might be issues with rubbing/articulation because of the wider tire, but in terms of tire and rim fitment, is this possible?

Actually, you should divide 265 by 25.4 since you have the tread in mm. 25.4mm=1inch (2.54cm is 25.4mm).

And I find it easier to use this formula to get the tire size:

tire size x ratio / 25.4 x 2 + rim diameter. so 265 x .75 / 25.4 x 2 + 16 = 31.65

i know what the numbers mean, i was trying to explain them all out to a member asking a question.
just checked i forgot to put 26.5 and put 265

285s and 295s are okay on a 8inch wide wheel. Past that width, some would say use a wider rim.

I'm sure you know what the numbers mean, I was just correcting some of the errors for the others that might not know.

The one thing to check is to make sure the wheels clear the FJs front calilpers. I haven't heard of any 17" wheels that don't fit but I know that some models of 16" wheels don't fit.

'07 VB FJ 6MT, 3'' OME, 285/75/R16 Nitto Terra Grapplers, 16x8 ATX Chamber Teflons, Demello Front Bumper, TRD CAI, TRD Exhaust, Lightforce 170s, Trail Gear sliders, SCUBA Mod and some other minor doodads...

The Ultimate Toolbox: Duct tape - For things that move but shouldn't; WD40 - For things that don't move but should.
