  1. Thinking about getting Milestar Patagonia mt 285/70/17

    Wheels and Tires
what size? I haven't noticed too much in the way of slip-sliding. I will skid a bit when it just starts raining, but when it gets soaked, no issues. The tires themselves are grippy IMO. This would be on gravel and pavement / asphalt. As for snow, I'll defer on judgement on how good they do...
  2. Thinking about getting Milestar Patagonia mt 285/70/17

    Wheels and Tires
I installed Falken AT3W's on another vehicle our family owns, and its a nice tire. I really like my Patagonia M/T's though. I won't be rock crawling or anything, but I've bombed down rutted out muddy roads, plowed through the first real snow of the season with ZERO issue, and I've felt them...

My truck doesn't care! I love these tires This is a bit more current, lol. This is why I bought the tires, SNOW traction is incredible So badass man.

LOL. TMI? Well, point is, it sounds great. That little connector should be here soon, so I can give a demo locally if anybody wants to hear it.

This is the LF woofer response, with no crossovers. Distortion is good but shows a crossover point in the 70-80hz range will probably be ideal. The excitation of materials, even deadened ones, occurs below this and starts to cause issues. Still, the response of the GS690 woofers in these...

Oh I noticed I didn't take any pics of the tweeters and how all that went. I was doing it in near-darkness in the cold, so I just didn't think about pictures. But what I did was use 1/8" thick hardboard panel, cut to match the shape of the existing speaker, and then a circle cut out to mount...

As for connecting these woofers, I elected to cut and solder on the wiring leading up to the door on each side. The access is good and it works well right here to pull back the factory sheathing and snip/solder. Next up, I pulled the factory sub to see the dual voice coil color setup. I used...

Tme to show off the door work. My 2012 FJ w/ the JBL setup looks like this to start. I like the reinforced areas, nice touch Toyota. Got the first layer of deadening inside. About 1.5 sheets for the inside, so about 70% coverage. More than my typical job, but then again the speakers going...

Yeah its all the JBL stuff. Has Harmon stickers all over it. You can see in my video, the connector is totally different. So, I guess that would be the determining factor. The shape/style of the head unit looks pretty much identical to your pic.

I think you could still wire it in, it would just be a manual effort. OR, if your FJ doesn't have the 10 speaker setup, then it may have different wiring. Here's my thread on this relative to this specific year...

That looks just like the one in my 2012 that I just pulled out. Problem is, for me at least.... the wiring is totally different. I have the 10 speaker setup, and apparently the wiring for older FJ's has bigger pins and less of them. Wiring harnesses 70-1761 type... I made a vid on this.

I can't speak for what people have managed to stuff in an existing enclosure, but I can give you the basic physics of why that probably won't work out so well. A subwoofer driver and its enclosure work together to produce the desired result. If you change one of the variables, the enclosure OR...
  13. Complete Overhaul... V8 Swap?

    General Discussion
I think the only law to watch out for is that the engine must be newer than the vehicle. So, that shouldn't be too hard with an older FJ. Money resolves a lot of problems. And there will be a LOT of problems with this. I would say the Toyota engines are more likely to have a match with other...

Minor update, just dealing with mid-30 degree temps so things are going slow the last couple days. I've removed the jute from under the floor vinyl, since it was damaged by the previous owner in what I assume is salty snow melt. I've replaced the flooring jute with 1/4" Neoprene, glued down...
  15. dash speakers upgrade

    Stereo / Electronics / Electrical
Try to seal/couple the speaker up with the opening for those dash speakers if you can. Maybe try forms of foam to "cup" them to the factory panel. This will prevent some cancellation occurring due to diffraction. That part you removed was there to serve that purpose.

Small update, I felt compelled to get at least something done so I trudged out in a wintery drizzle right after work, to try and at least accomplish a small task. I managed to solder up my iDatalink Maestro SW box, which is used for steering wheel control. This unit taps into connector E43...
  17. Radio replacement - 2012 JBL = no aftermarket radio harness

    Stereo / Electronics / Electrical
This may be true, but none of that is explained anywhere by Metra, or anybody else that I could find. However, I can tell you that this problem extends beyond just Metra and similar companies. Last night, I set out to wire up my iDatalink Maestro SW box to get steering wheel controls going...

Here's the latest on my ride. Youtube vids this one goes over the issue discovered with harnesses on this year truck, also posted this in the audio technical section JIC. this one hits an overview of the plan. The weather took a turn on me, so now its a waiting game to get back out...
  19. Radio replacement - 2012 JBL = no aftermarket radio harness

I ended up doing the very thing I was trying to avoid, which was cutting up the factory harness to install my system. Here's a video to explain This one goes over the issue with the harness, part number 70-1761 (Metra, Harmony, etc) does not fit these trucks. I don't know the model year...
  20. Old Skool audio

I researched horns in the FJ, but I came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work out. Even mini bodies. I didn't even factor in a manual trans version. edit: If you can get them to fit, a few horn experts over at DIYMA have found that horns + Dirac LIVE on the MiniDSP 8x12 processor seems to...
