Hello world,

I am going to be buying my first FJC here in the next two weeks and I was wondering if there were any major improvements in the 2008 model over the 2007. I am looking at 2 right now one is a 2007 and one is 2008. The 2008 actually has more miles on it and costs more. Is there any reason to go for the 2008 other than the newer birthday? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lack of possible fender bulges...

2008
-Has the engine immobilizer (chip in the key)
-Has revised stronger rear diff gears
-possibly revised inner fenders
-side sun visors

There's not a whole lot else that's different

Welcome and post up pics when you get it!
Might not be too many differences but not having to possibly deal with the fender bulges and a broken diff might be worth it.

There are certain make dates of the 2007s which I believe are mostly affected by the fender bulges and certain differentials, ones made in Mexico, that are the ones to avoid.

Either way make sure you have your vehicle inspected by someone familiar with these issues. Maybe a fellow Fj'er on this board in your area.

Thank you all so much for the input. I was unaware of the fender issue so I am very glad I asked. I have now been overwhelmed with the number of threads and discussions out there. From what I have read, Toyota is telling different people different causes of this problem and I was hoping maybe someone here has found a definitive answer to some questions I have.

1. Is the problem completely isolated to '07 models?
2. Has a singular cause to the cracking been found?
2. Is there a known way to prevent the cracking?

Thanks again!

Toyota must have made a lot more FJ's in 2007 or else a lot of people know about the issues with the 07. In my area, 90% of the FJC's listed on craigslist are 07's

EDIT: I did my own research. Should have done so before speaking. Sales in 06 and 07 were north of 56K units each year (meaning partially 07 and partially 08 models probably) and then sales dropped to 28K units for 08.

Below are the production numbers, the first model year was 2007 so you are most likely correct that the 2007 model had the greatest number. It all depends on how much of the production years bleed into the next model year. Plus it has been 4-5 years since first production so you would expect to start seeing the 2007 models.

2006 - 56,225
2007 - 55,170
2008 - 28,688
2009 - 11,941
2010 - 14,959

Yeah I think you probably pulled that from wikipedia as did I. Haha. And yeah, I guess the time frame is about average for the 07's to be showing up on the market. Still seems fishy to me. I don't even see as many 08's and I would think just short of half of the 55,170 number in 07 production was actually 08 models. Who knows.

If safety is an issue for you the 2007s DO NOT have side airbags the 2008s DO! that was really important to me...

Oops, my bad...the airbags in 2007 were optional, in 2008 they are standard. so some 2007 FJs might not have them.
