Hey all,

For the past few weeks I've had the FJ itch. I've been doing countless hours of research about the different models, and issues that come with FJ's. I been looking at 2010+ models, and really wanted a Trail Teams model but budgeted myself $20,000 or less.

Last night, while browsing Craigslist, I came across a 2010 Toyota FJ, Trail Teams Special Edition model. Desert sand color, with 150,000 miles, 6-speed manual transmission, number 315 of 1500 trail teams for the 2010 model year. Offered at 20K but negotiable on price. I just about had an accident in my pants. From the photos it looks like it in good shape, but the 150K mileage concerns me. The owner says he's done routine oil changes and has only used synthetic oil, which makes me happy. He's never had a problem with the throw out bearing, but he's the 3rd owner, and doesn't know if it was ever serviced.

Here's a few pics;

I'm going to take a drive tomorrow morning to go look at the truck, I'm excited to see it but the only thing I'm worried about is the milage. I drive 75 miles a day for work, and need to know that this FJ is going to be reliable. Is there any way to know if the throw-out bearing TSB has been done? I know its noob territory to ask, but what specifics should I look out for? I'm meeting the guy at an off-road trail to give it a test drive, so i'll be able to see how it performs both on-road and off, which is cool of the seller to do.

After looking at the car, and seeing that everything is in working order and its in good condition, I was going to offer the seller $18,000 for the truck. Based on the NADA information...

What would you offer for this? does it sound like a good deal?

I personally think $20k is way too overpriced. I would never pay that much for one with that kind of mileage. You will be piling up many miles very quickly and will probably end up with one of the highest mileage FJs out there in 1 year.

Are there any extras that they are throwing in with it?

Seems like many folks on here with high mileage FJs experience little to no issues. So it really depends what you consider is a good deal.

Unless you're a forest ranger and need the offroad capability, or you live in the frozen north and need AWD/4x4 for most of your commute, buy another car to put all those miles on. Civics and Corollas are cheap so killing one as a daily doesn't hurt anybody's feelings. Buying an FJ to kill this way is a shame, you want a disposable car that you won't miss when you sell it at 250K or drive it into the ground.

$18K seems about right if you were buying it to keep, modify and drive as a 2nd vehicle while daily-driving a beater into the ground. There's 18 FJ's in the US under $26K / 45K miles, if your budget doesn't have to be $20K you'd do well to buy one of these trucks with 1/5 - 1/3 the miles for a few grand more. Of those 18, 6 are 2010+'s. Plane tickets and gas to drive home are cheap compared to getting the right car.

Either way, good luck!

yeah I'm with jimmy-buffett buy a Civic at 75 miles a day you're going to save at least 150.00 a month in gas and miles on a Civic won't hurt it via those things will go forever ..i bought one over a year ago and its saved me so much so i use the FJ as a toy....FJs don't make great commuter vehicles via gas milage etc

I personally don't think using the FJ as your main commuter is a good idea especially for the miles you be driving everyday.

Also, IMO this car has too much miles for 18K. I would rather spend a couple extra thousand and get one with lower miles.

I think you can buy it cheaper but I'm most interested in a vehicles documented history and prefer 1 owner vehicles with records.

I'd rather have a 200k mile vehicle that lived in the country and drives 100 miles a day to work on 2 lane highway than the same model with 75k that was in stop and go city traffic running short trips every day, all else being equal.

My 08 has 153k miles on it, been maintained properly and still runs and drives like new. I just came back from a 2800 mile round trip with 0 issues.

Go look at it, but keep your options open. A perfect 1 owner is out there somewhere.

x3

At 75/day (IMO) an FJ isn't a good choice.

My wife's FJ is her daily driver but her round trip each day is only 15 miles.

It's the wrong color opie. sorry. I drive mine 50 miles to work (there and back) and I love it. Gas isn't bad but I only have to make that drive three times a week and I fill up once a week.
