i would like to lower my headlights a little bit...Im getting lots of flashes from other cars and it bugs me.

is there an easy way to do this?

It does not seem easy at all.

The adjustment screws are on the back of the headlight assembly. The repair manual seems to require you to remove the grille, the entire light assembly (turnsignal and all and including the bodycolor plastic filler under the light) and then adjust the lights, put them back on, check the alignment, take them off, adjust them again, and keep doing this until they are correct, and then re install grille. Of course this all involves the now standard fragile plastic claws in addition to normal fasteners, and requires prying, etc, without managing to scuff or damage anything.



I get lots of flashes from other drivers too, particularly when the cargo area is heavily laden and the beams are higher.

The left/right ("B") adjustment screws are on the outside top back of the lamp assemblies, and the up/down ("A") ones are on the inside bottom back. Luckily they are not completly inaccessaible (but as close to completely inaccessable as possible). THey are barely visible looking down in behind the lamp housing, but it does not seem humanly possilbe to get an 8mm wrench in there at all.



I have been thinking of drilling a hole in the metal which blocks access to this "A" adjustment screw so a socket could be gotten in there to adjust the aim of the headlights without removing them.

I hope I am wrong and there is some way around all this besides taking it to the shop.

Man are you kidding.................this is the first car I've actually LOVED my headlight. I wouldn't touch them if people hit me with a spot light.
But seriously, I haven't had people flashing me even thought it seems high to me.

STOP!!! Toyota would not require you to remove the grill assembly to adjust the elevation of your headlights. Maybe Lexxus but not TOYO. This is an SUV after all. I Installed My Rough Country Lift Last Week. There is a headlight adjustment channel on the top of the cover. It is a hole and you can actually see the bolt. All You Need Is A Long Flat Head Screwdriver. The bolt sits on a cam just like the one on a hose clamp. Turn it clockwise To Go Down, Counterclockwise To Go Up. Email Me If You Need Some Picks. This Is Only For The Elevation Alignment. I Am Afraid That If Yo Need To Adjust The Aim, you are screwed and would have to follow White Rim's direction. Believe Me, You Do Not Need To Take Off the Grill. You can actually see the channel on White Rim's diagram (top of "A" bolt). They would not put the channel unless you could use the channel. Remember, your baby was built in Japan not Detroit.......

Had a cab driver flash me. Checked my headlights, they were on dim. So I flashed him to show the difference. I could see the shadow of his stupid skull on the street as we passed, the low riding bastard. As you can tell, I dislike cab drivers.

Seriously tho, this happened a few times even when the FJ was stock.

It sucks having to adjust these headlights, but as the person said above just get a long screwdriver. There is a hole on the top of the headlight you can stick it down and turn the knob. You'll see the metal "gear" down there.

I don't see any choice but to lower them when you do a lift that levels the truck out since from the factory they are aimed high due to the jackrabbit stock stance.

With the Extreme PIAAs it would be even worse. I don't want to blind other drivers, not cool.

Actually the left-right adjustment "gear" is also accesible under a cover you can pry back

Put an aftermarket bumper on the front. The factory headlight position was designed for the front end dip with the extra weight.

HEADLAMP adjustment

Anyone familiar with headlamp adjustment on the fj?? it appears that the grill might need to be removed ...because i can not find any adjusters ...obvious onesanyways, on the outside...

Let's also get this in the thread. Now that we know how to turn the bolt (see posts #4 and #10 above), what is the correct procedure to aim them right? Thanks.

well big bill, what I do is take the rig out on a lonely highway, and open the hood, stand in front of one headlight, and adjust the other one up and down until it is "correct", which is a subjective thing. Then I do the other headlight.

The problem with these headlights is that there is a fairly abrupt transition between the illuminated region and the region above the beam which is more or less dark.

So if the lights are "correct" for a certain loading configuration, they can end up "too high" if you have a heavier load in the back or are towing something, using the stock suspension anyways. Spose this is less of an issue with higher spring rates.

So I have adjusted mine for my standard load. If I am going to carry a heavier load a long way I tweak the beams down a bit so they dont blind people.

This is not by the book, but it works for me.
