Some time back I spoke with Jason about an idea. We are finalizing it now!
The thought was to get Ouray Mountain Rescue to put on a class on first aid on the trail. The idea is that many of us wheel in remote areas and rough trails. There is a chance of bad things happening...what do we do until help arrives?
When I spoke with OMR they were behind the idea. They stated that the folks at last years Summit treated them very well and they would do this for us. They rely on donations, so if you like the class then maybe buy a T-shirt or a brick from them. They really do have our backs if we get in trouble around Ouray.
Also Tony of Ouray PD is backing this. He also states that the Summit was the best organized event he's seen! That says a lot for those that put the Summit together and all of us.
For those that don't know me I work as an aircraft mechanic with San Juan Regional AirCare in Farmington NM. I mentioned this to our manager, and asked if we could send our helicopter up to be part of the class. His response was "h*ll yes, we'd love to do this". So if the helicopter isn't out on a call we will have it in Ouray! The thoughts again are what to do in a remote area when a helicopter is needed to get one of us out. We will talk about how to work safely around helicopters. One of our core values is to promote air medical. Too many people only see helicopters as something that shuts down roads after an accident or noisy things that wake people at night.
We are aiming at having class at like 4-5 PM after people get off the trails ( and before the drinking starts, no alcohol near the aircraft please). This would take place at the park by the hot springs pools on the north end of town.
Hope to see you all there!
Brian
