Anyone towing a toy hauler?

15751 Views 33 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  lilpunky
Iv'e been looking at getting into the sport of ATV's and at the same time been looking at ways to transport them. Ive been entertaing the idea of a toyhauler, but so far i can't find a model that is within the FJ's weight limits. I gues i don't nessasarly need a toy hauler, but would like somthing that is enclosed with a living quarters. Just curious to see if anyone here has found a model that cound work with the FJ. Thanks for any help.

5150, I just finished the install of elec trailer brakes, the easiest ever in the cruiser. I pull a 12 utility trailer that I am in the process of converting into a cargo that can come off. I hardly ever do things the easy way. I have had 3000lbs behind my cruiser and brakes would have been good. If you are looking for a smaller trailer that has quarters and cargo you may look into a horse trailer.
good luck,

No toy hauler?? Me thinks bad idea!!!

I've been keeping an eye out for the same thing, Just need something that will hold 1-2 ATV's..

There's always the Fleetwood Evolution II or III, they both have a front cargo deck that can hold an ATV, downside is they are pop up soft sided trailers..but they do come in Sun Fusion Yellow.. 8D

yep. I was thinking about the Evolution 3 as well. But like you said, its a pop up trailer. Aslo, i think i'm going to get 2 ATV's, so it looks like that won't work. But i have to admit, that would be a preety bad as combo. Espeacially behind your decked out rig!

Thanks for the input. Since i'm open to idea's i checked out some horse trailers like you siad, but the ones with living quarters(at least the ones i found) are way to big for the FJ, and are only avaible in a goose neck.
Some time back Dirt Wheels Magazine (ATV magazine) featured a trailer with living quarters on the front and an open, utility-type area on the back. This kept the weight down and it was a tandem axle bumper hitch trailer. Maybe their website would allow you to scroll back and look for this. I recycled all my old copies a while back.
They seem a little big for the FJ. I currently pull 5 ATV's with an open trailer tandem axle. Loaded with gear weighs in around 4500 lbs. FJ does great pulling it and no handling problems. The weight of the toy hauler along with ATV's and gear would definitely overload the FJ. I would love one, but would use my other vehicle to pull it with. Also would like a Class A motorhome with toy hauler built in. Put the ATV's in the motorhome and pull the FJ. Best of both worlds.

Cabin A SUT Twist SUT about 1/2 way down the page

Wells Cargo Corporation
Interior can be optioned in different ways.

I have been looking at these and some others for awhile. I have some address somewhere for a couple of others that are basically flat bed trailers with cabin tents. There are also a line from one place that have a pop up tent trailer mounted on the front of a flat bed trailer with ATV space at the rear. There are a couple of toy box style that can be loaded to a total weight of 7000lbs but if you only have 1 ATV and load light on the gear you might get in at less than 5000lbs.
Sweet! Looks like SUT's might fit the bill for me. Also will look into the wells cargo trailers. Those look preety promising to. Thanks for the help guys!
Hey, i'm a wells cargo dealer, and i have quads, well, 1 and a bike, and i wanna be able to camp also. I am debating between an enclosed 6 or 7 X12ft. Or an open trailer and just tentin it. you can get heat, insulation, windows, rv style door, electric, 12v or 120, extra height, pretty much whatever you need. downside is you cant see all options on their website. have to go to dealer, the wells line has a 48 page option book in my sales book.
p.s. the base trailer befor options in the wells line starts at 3200.$ or so retail, there is a road force line that starts a little cheaper. both prices are for 6x12. both weigh around 1000-1200 with v nose.
you dont want to stick something as big as a toy hauler behind a FJ. the weight, dual axle, and huge tall trailer for the wind to kick around will absolutly overpower your vehicle.

i think a 6x10 would be about the most i would stick behind a FJ as far as cargo trailers go. especially if you are going to be hauling long distances.

look into the interstate and paces. the pace has the upper hand, but both are reasonably priced. we had a 6x10 interstate for years for karting and it was solid. wasnt a top of the line trailer and wasnt fancy, but it got the job done and never gave us any trouble. towed all the way up and down the west coast with it.

if you can find a small used TPD Trailer that is in your price range, go for it. hands down the best cargo trailer on the market. we just got a new 14x7 TPD dual axles with forward and side cabnets, stoneguard, etc... it is an awesome piece.
I have a 24' Salem toy hauler. The thing is a pig. :( I wouldn't consider towing it with the FJ unfortunately. I use a Ford Excursion for towing it. When I bought the trailer I had a Chevy Suburban. It couldn't manage the trailer very well, it's that big and heavy, so I bought the Excursion. The only reason I kept the Excursion is because of the trailer.

The trailer is great but do a lot of homework before you take the plunge. Realize what you're going to suck in gas and make sure it makes sense for the way you're going to use it. For example, you could possibly just tow the ATVs in a flat bed and stay in a hotel for the cost of towing the trailer to your ATV area. It depends on location, how often, overnight, etc.
Make a list of the things you want/need. With a Toy Hauler you get a lot of the extras you may or may not need.

Heat
Air conditioning
Hot Water
Bathroom
Shower indoor/outdoor
Stove
Oven
Microwave
Beds
Television
AC/DC
etc.

If you're going to use the FJ to pull it, I don't think a toy hauler will work, unless it's small like a few listed.

If you haven't been ATVing I'd suggest going a few times and figuring out what you need/want. often you can take an enclosed 6x12 or whatever and put in it, what you need.

I bought the Evolution III and am very happy. Watch the quad weights. The deck on the new Evo.'s is rated to 800 lbs. With gear, fuel, etc. most of the utility quads push that limit. It weghs about 4350 loaded and the FJ doesn't miss a beat pulling it up the hills. No problems with wind either due to lower profile than many of the hard side trailers. I looked for a hard side toy hauler under the weight limits and could not find any. Good luck.
Well I just bought a Cargo Mate by Forest river
Cargo Mate Cargo Trailers by Forest River.
It is 20 feet long and 7 feet wide with a "V" nose. I shopped for quite a while and test drove a few. The dealer I bought it from was nice enough to let me try all of the combinations on the road. Why the 20 foot? simple we have 3 ATV's and they will load nicely up the middle. I worked it out with all of our camping gear, ATV's the trailer will come in around 5000 lbs. wet, which is what the manufacturer says the FJ will do.

Now we are going from a motorhome to this and we are losing some ammenities. Like no more shower or hot water tank, no more fridge, no air conditioning and no furniture you would find in a house.

We will be using inflatable beds and cots, camping furniture, rubbermaid bins for storage, water jugs, camp stove and bar-b-q to cook outside, (Costco pop up canopy for cover) the creek to wash in. We are installing a portable toilette (some things the wife will NOT do without), we are using coolers with dry ice ( yes I figured out a way to keep it cool and not frozen for about 5 days), 1 small 12 volt RV battery, a portable generator, a portable pressure washer (for the ATV's) to use in the river, a box of tools and parts, jugs of gasoline, and a small portable compressor 120 volt.

I am insulating the trailer myself and running in some extra wire and plug ins. I will have the trailer an approximately 10 weeks then I can Mod it and go camping. Face it we all have gone away from true camping with our motorhomes and trailers. This one is still a trailer (no luxury ammenities) but we sleep off the ground and not in a tent and I can pull everything out and it becomes an empty van I can use to haul anything in.

During the road tests I found that the 8"6" trailers need the FJ to get extension mirrors (not such a great idea). The "V" nosed ones were better than the flat front ones but still pushed a LOT of air (I was originally looking at an 8'6" X16'). The dealer I bought from would not sell me an 8'6" trailer stating it would pull poorly and really kill my milage (he had about 10 of them in stock), he strongly recommended the 7' on for the FJ. Road testing it was very nice, it pulled great, side visibilty was good (no mirror extensions) and on test day it was very windy (gusts up to 55 mph) (steady winds of 25 mph), the FJ performed great and fuel milage was a negligible drop (about 3 mpg)

The one I ordered (yes he had what I wanted in stock...sort of) is yellow with a white roof, has a screen door option on the man door, has 3 windows that open, has roof racks for my canoe (yellow white and black), has a propane and battery storage compartmant, 2 in floor storage compartments 2X3500 lb. axles and a black and white checkered floor comming in at 2900 lbs with 315 lbs hitch weight.

Total price with options and shipping?................$10500.00 cdn.

My trailer will be here tomorrow...I can hardly wait....but I can't pick it up till Thursday....something about PDI and getting into the busy season......but Thursday it will be here....pulled some of the trailers from work...Fairly heavy equipment trailers....no problem...won't be able to race a Vette of the line but who wants to?
