No they are two different sizes. 33/12.5x17 = 32.71/11.22 x 17 is the same as 285/70-17

Depends on the brand of tire. The BFG's are within .17 of an inch of being 33's

cheers,

Dale is right. They do vary quite greatly between brands. You need actual measurments to be absolutely sure. Always take those numbers with a grain of salt.

for all intents & purposes a 285 would be equal to 11.5"s wide as opposed to 12.5. a 315 wide tire is closer to 12.5"s. As stated it varies quite a bit based on brand.

Quite true, tires vary a lot. My cousin showed up at our remote camp with his "new" (to him) 2007 FJ. He had to replace the tires right after getting it as the stockers were thin. He got some Definity Dakota AT's at Pep Boys in stock size 265/70-17.

As I looked them over I though something seemed weird. When I checked the tread width they were nearly an inch wider than my stock 2008 Bridgestones. The tread pattern also looked a lot like BFG's. I'm putting these on my short list, nice tire.
