Aux interior door light wiring

Here is what I did to make my aux LED lights come on when I open the door. I have yet to install the switch but when I do I’ll post the pics.

My objective is to have additional lighting near my feet when entering and an optional manual on switch.

Do this and any mod I post at your own risk.
First: Disconnect the battery.

1. Open fuse box and find the red wire going to connector 1A pin 4 on driver’s side junction box. NOTE: This is the power or +12V and will turn off after some time (10 minutes?). It is the same power that goes to your dome light. This is fused through the 10A "DOME" fuse and should not require an additional fuse if you are using an LED that will draw less than 1 amp or so. If you are not sure of your amp draw then an additional fuse is suggested.

2. Install T-tap onto red wire.

3. Find a convenient ground point if you want your lighting on for 10 minutes after the door is closed (not my preferred option!!).

Or connect your switch to connector 1A pin 8 for the door ground and connector 1A pin 7 for the always on ground. (I have not installed my switch yet; sorry no pics of this).
Don't forget to reconnect the battery!

Here's my modified wiring diagram:

Nice mod .. great idea .. any pics of where you mounted the LEDs?
I connected my wires on the driver's side pillar. The ribbon cable is clearly visible there and a whole lot of room to work with. My underdash lights work with the dome light to light up the floor area.
Would love to see pix of where/how you connected in the pillar.

Thanks.

I just spliced in and soldered. I took pictures but they came out blurry. I taped it all up fished the wires through and attached my lights to the side kick panels.

Thx, Danieloz46!

Nice LED mod, looks like a cool idea!:rocker:
Cool. Great idea. I think that there is a connector that would go to the lighted mirror if they ever come out with one.

Can you take a couple of pics of where you have them mounted?

Did you ever install the switch? What kind of switch is needed SPDT? Thanks
just to confirm before i get to installing this all. on the "on-off-on" switch, the light ground will go to the center post on the switch and the other two posts on the switch will go to pin 7 and 8 of the ribbon cable respectively correct? and of course the + will be constant on to the light. this will make the additional light to function as the dome light. thanks for the help

Nope, I have been a little busy with other things and have not added a switch yet.

Yes, a SPDT would work just fine. You could hook the other side of it to B+ so that you could turn them on anytime.

B+ ? (pardon the delinquency)

is it battery +? :) i see how hooking up to that will make them work all the time as opposed to red wire providing + for only about 10min as you said in your first post
I wanted to hook up my LED rock lights to a DPDT switch so they would come on with the interior lights / off/ on w/ ignition sw. All works ,but lights stay on w/ interior on position with key on yet the interior lights remain off ?
got it all set up couple of weeks ago. works like a charm. very useful information on wire locations. thanks
Hey guys, I'm new here, though I've owned my FJ for 3 years. Just wanted to thank the originator of this thread, it was extremely informative and useful. Just thought I'd mention one important note - In the install notes, He said you can hook up your negative/ground to the white wire (ribbon wire) or any other convenient ground (which would leave the lights on for like 10 minutes...). Well, I initially opted to hook it to the ground behind the left wall panel, drivers side, near the floor. It works as a ground, however, the floor lights will stay on the ENTIRE time the vehicle is operational. They will come on with the dome light when the door is open, and when using the key fob to lock the doors, they will shut off when the dome goes off. But, through my experience, the entire time I'm driving, those led lights stay on (even though the dome light is off while driving). I have yet to hook my neg/ground up to that ribbon wire...I will be doing that in the near future (it's just too damn cold in NY right now!) As I said - just informing you all of my experience.

In Australia, fuses look very different, still can't locate the active (red) wire.

That is strange! Mine seems to work just ask described. Maybe you have different wiring? What year is it?
Nice job Amigo!

First off, I thank you for the information on this thread! I was finally able to install my LED door projectors with most of the info here.

I had to do it slightly different to make it work properly on mine. I accessed the ribbon through the driver's A pillar as described above. Thank god I tried that route instead because the wires in the ribbon are minuscule and the plastic insulator is quite thick and stiff in ratio to the copper wire. Here's a clear picture with the middle wire stripped and marked black :

Stripping the insulator was a bit of a pain, I started with the middle, then moved on to the right side wire in the ribbon( which itself runs up and down in the A pillar ). I managed to chop the wire by accident so I had to solder a jumper to attach the red wire:

I used a weed whacker line to fish the wire down through the A pillar and under the dash to power the door lights.

After removing the door panel, I used the trimmer line again to fish the wire from the door to the interior. I had to remove the 2 bolts on the flexible rubber boot that's attached to the door.

When removed, you will see I tiny gap between the plastic wire clip, on the top and the bottom of it. This was enough room to get the wire fished through

Now, here's where I had to change things. As it turns out, my dome lights and newly installed LEDs would come ON when I closed the door, and stay on when I opened it. It's 3am and I'm getting tired, now frustrated lol! It turns out, I had to splice back into the A pillar ribbon wires, and use the LEFT wire instead of the RIGHT wire for your RED, the MIDDLE is still used for BLACK. Now it works as it should, and was damn well worth the effort!

Again, thanks again to you guys for the information..I'm not an electrical or mechanical guru, and this projected help boost my confidence another notch with modding my FJ.

I hope this helps other 'new' FJ owners who want door activated lights..at some point, I have to figure out how to shove an RCA from the door to the inside of the FJ for L/R cameras. Being a short guy, I could use all the visibility aids I can get lol!

Thanks for the write up Fat. I was wondering where to tie into that ribbon wire and your pics were a big help. :rocker:
