Recently with absurd gas prices I’ve been looking more closely at my fuel consumption-miles driven and have been driving more conservatively, as best I can lol. That lead me to wonder, how many miles per tank do others average in their fj. Assuming you go till the fuel light is on and fill up about 15 gallons, how many miles do you travel with 15 gallons and how many mpg? I do realize this will vary greatly as mods can easily change gas mileage in a heart beat. With that said. Im currently running 33s, about an inch lift, steel front bumper, low profile roof rack, and have done numerous upgrades under the hood. With all that I am currently traveling about 220-240 miles per tank (15 gallons) which means my mpg is between 14 and 15 mpg, sometimes higher depending on if I do more highway driving not.

With driving styles, different mods, different environment average mpg is like asking a group of guys, just using guys as an example and I have more experience with guys, asking guys what a good looking gal looks like.

"Miles per tank' is a useless unit of measure, you need to calculate actual miles per gallon, based on exact distance driven and gallons of fuel required to completely refill the tank.

I've also got a 2014, and have meticulously tracked fuel consumption since new, including through a careful a 5K mile break-in.

Dead stock, no roof rack or any other modifications, driver only, and after break-in, I was occasionally able to get 23 MPG on the freeway (flat) at a fixed 65 MPH with conservative driving.

Now I've got a hard-shell roof-top tent, full aluminum armor, sliders, fridge, on-board air compressor, aluminum front bumper, etc. and can consistently get 19-20 MPG on the freeway, again with very conservative driving. Around town, even with conservative driving (2K RPM shiftpoint, lots of closed-throttle coasting while approaching stop signs and stop lights, etc.) fuel consumption degrades to 16-18 MPG. 'Slightly' aggressive driving can easily drive that down to 14 MPG.

Any kind of headwind triggers a big increase in fuel consumption. Traveling cross-country or through mountainous areas, when approaching any kind of grade I disengage cruise control to avoid a high-RPM one or two gear downshift.

If you monitor instantaneous fuel consumption with Torque Pro or some other app, or install hardware like a Scan Gage, you will be able to see, real time, how every different combination of throttle, RPM, transmission gear, engine load, etc. affect fuel consumption. You'll be shocked to see how little throttle opening, or how little an increase in RPM, is required to drive MPG down into the single-digits.

I get as low as 8.5 mpg at 82 mph with some wind and as high as 14.5 mpg at 60 mph driving easy and trying to get good MPG on flat ground.

I have 37" tires, 4.88 gears, roof rack. Usually its in the 11-12 mpg range.

These are all figured on the highway. In town probably about 11 mpg. I actually coast as much as possible but tend to accelerate hard.

Are you correcting for the huge (>15%) speedometer and odometer errors resulting from the 37" tires ??

If not, your indicated 82 MPH is actually closer to 95 MPH ... takes a LOT of HP to make a brick fly at 95 MPH.

Yeah I have a speedometer calibrator to match the speedo with the GPS speed on my phone and tablet. How that effects the odometer I'm not 100% sure.

First post. Bought an 07 FJ (155k miles) about 10 days ago. Set the trip meter at my last fill-up. 269.5 miles driven, 15.02 gallons = 17.94 mpg. All in town commuting. Honestly much better than I expected.

I live in British Columbia on top of a mountain. I have a 3" lift, rooftop tent, Metal Tech sliders, front and rear tube bumpers, plus drawers, you get the idea. I consistently get 400 km-450 km. Unless it's in the middle of winter, I get 300-350 km.

Typically around 13-ish, although i do not keep meticulous track. W PA hills and 3" lift with 34" tires, steel bumper, armor, gear, etc. Mine is a 2014, and I got up to 19 hwy when stock; so the mods and added weight definitely affect mileage, especially in hilly areas. Also, it seems the autos do better than the manuals (full time 4wd and lower gearing).

My single most improvement for my fuel economy was replacing the stock muffle and exhaust piping (after cats) with Banks Power Monster 3-inch Exhaust system. I gained 0.7 mpg on city and 1.2 mpg on highway driving. The exhaust is more throaty, but I prefer the V8 sound. The only time that its ignoring is on a long long grade pull, then I turn up the tunes. Running 33's and Icon Stage One lift. I do maintain MAF & Throttle sensors and air intake filter replacement. 2014 FJC

Pretty much the same here. Off-road, on-road, back roads, in town, on the highway. The only time I typically get lower gas mileage is on the highway at higher speeds. My 35s on stock gears like running 90mph in 6th gear. Seems happiest there, despite the protest from the falling gas needle.

What engine RPM are you seeing with 35's at 90?

Your 33s are underreporting your odo readings by ± 4%.
So 20mpg closer to 21 mpg, 15mpg is 15.5mpg.

4% is a lot, my odo is off just under 6% measured distance over 70 miles.

Excellent question, I have no idea and don't drive too much on the highway. I'd guess in the 2600-2700rpm range off the top of my head.

Then there is the summer / winter fuel blend thing.
17.2 presently on 33's without any correction factors.
It is what it is, I just watch consumption as an indicator to changes in engine performance...
