So Im thinking of taking advantage of the last minute 10% off deal at discountdirect.com and I come across a situation. Whats the difference?

LT255/75R-17/C1 JEP This one is 118$

LT255/75R-17/C1 108Q This one is 224$

So...........what the heck does the JEP mean and why is it so cheap? Can anybody help?

PS-anybody running this size tire? Likes, dislikes? Thanks.

Good question. BFG doesn't even list 2 different 255 size. It does indicate that 255's tread pattern is different from KM patterns. I believe TCAO has order these and will be putting them on as soon as he gets his wheels.

Not sure about the designater, but if I was getting a 3" OME, I'd go for 33" tires as well in stead of 32". Just my opinion. :) Tim
Me and FJ's FJ go out with jeeps around here quite often. I am running BFG AT's in 285 and he is running BFG MT in 255. Even though i am running a larger tire (though an AT) he gets through stuff easier than me most times.

That tire in that size works pretty well. It is a take off of the Rubicon, so most times you can find them with few miles, for dirt cheap. Probably cheaper than i got my swampers.

I believe that the diference in the case you described is AT vs MT, MT wins handsdown for offroad, but the AT kicks butt for hiway noise and fuel economy.:) Tim

Tim, there's an interesting read on skinny vs. wide tires. Take a look at it and it might change your opinion a little.

I do not know what the JEP version is, but I am running a set of the 108Q in that size and am very happy with them (I like taller and skinny tires - used to run 215/85-16s and 235/85-16s on my two previous Range Rover Classics).

My FJC is significantly heavier than a stock truck. It has an OME heavy/medium lift, front/rear ARB bumpers, 9K winch, DO sliders, ARB touring rack, steelies etc.. I carry about 80-100 lbs of stuff in the back and usually a 70 lbs tandem kayak on the roof.

Although it is my DD, my wife and I also use it mainly for expeditions/camping/kayaking, where we usually encounter dirt roads, some rocks and mud, rain (heavy at times) and sometimes moderate snow. The tires are great off-road, and the on-the-road handling has never been a problem. In inclement weather, I just try to remember that it is a tall and heavy truck, riding on tall and narrow mud tires, and drive accordingly.

They are definitely louder than an AT tire, but are acceptable, and in my case, the howl caused the roof rack cancels out the tire noise anyway. The wear is also acceptable - I currently have about 8K miles on them and estimate that they will last at least another 20K. Finally, although I think I would have been happier with a 255/80-17 (if they made it), size-wise the 255/75-17s look good even with the lift.

BTW, you can get them (108Q) at Mavis Tire for $108 + shipping.

Thanks for the input. I talked with the manager of my local discount tire and he made a call to the discount tech line and they told him the designator is there to specify that the tire was manufactured for JEEP a while ago. I guess they did not meet the sales expected for that vehicle last year and so they had an excess of tires. Therefore a lower price was put in place to eliminate the remaining tires. Once the BFG MT's with the JEP designator on the end are gone we'll have to pay the 224.99 regular price for the same tire :mecry: For now, super sweet deal if you like 32" pizza cutters :rocker: I just bought 5 @118$ at discount plus they threw me 200 for my old Duelers. 497 mounted and balanced is'nt bad for 5 new BFG mudders! Best of all ......minimal road noise, no rubbing , and they look pretty groovy.

Bad news for now, my fiance went to new york and stole my camera for the trip! :mecry: I will get these picks up as soon as I find a replacement camera (within the next couple days for sure). On the brighter side I did go ahead and purchase black lugs and locks and they look great!

It's just a screwball theory, but I think the nonstandard tread design on these may have been the result of interaction between Jeep and BFG, seeking a quieter tire with less rolling resistance (better mpg).

It seems to me that a mud tire selected and apparently refined to go on a mass market production vehicle is probably going to be a pretty street friendly mud tire. Light and skinny too!

I'm mounting mine up this weekend. Purchased from macstirebin on ebay. Can't wait!
