I have an older spot device but have been thinking of upgrading to a device with texting.

I read an article somewhere where SPOTS or InReach have been reported as not working when needed to. 2 units were sent back for testing after failing when needed. If I find it again, I'll post it up.
When I researched my spot device(2013), I had run across several articles like that as well. Not knowing how many people actually use the device in an emergency, it would be hard to determine if this is an issue or if it is operator error...
I am thinking though that the technology of the newer devices have to be better and more reliable. I had used mine so that the wife could track my location when I was out in the wilds as well as sending OK messages.
Would I do better with a 4 foot antenna mounted on the rear door hinge or a 2 foot roof rack mounted antenna? I have a 4 foot now that only sticks about a foot max past the RTT. My SWB is 1 to 1.3 depending on the channel. Thinking of switching the setup to get more antenna past the roof line of...
Just on the off chance that someone has done this: Have you mounted your CB betwixt the rear view and the CRAWL console? It looks to be a tight fit, but can it be done and done well? How did you do it and with which CB?
