Hi folks,

I join you from the 4runner forums. I've recently been tasked with installing the FJ cruiser case from an 07 automatic FJ into my 4runner. I got the case used and in good condition. In 4wd, the case works great, and in low and high it works great. In 2wd, there is a noise like metal clanking against each other, that goes away when the case is titled. I figured out that this gold gear ring shown in pictures is the one making the noise. It's rubbing against the other metal ring when moving. Is this normal? If not, is this a common issue that can be fixed? In all my searching I've yet to find any thing similar. I've attached a video of the gold ring duplicating the noise after a few moments of turning. Link to the youtube video is below showing the clunking.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Questions:
1. Did you install the transfer case in the vehicle, and that's when the 'clanking' was discovered? Or does it just 'clank' when sitting on the bench?
2. I'm sure you meant when the transfer case is 'tilted', and not 'titled', correct?
2. In your vid, how do you know that the shift forks are detented in absolutely the correct position?

1. I have not installed the transfer case in the vehicle, it's yet to be installed into a car. The clanking was discovered when on the bench.
2. Yes, sorry for the typo! When tilted a certain way the clanking will go away.
3. I know that the shift forks are detented in the correct position because it had the stock shifter on it when it was on the bench making the same noise before it was even taken apart. I've put it back together and moved the shifters and the noise is still there in 2wd high. When in neutral the noise is gone, and in 4wd the sound is gone.
