I wanted to take my son to Cochran Falls this spring but I've seen a post that claims the trail/road to the bottom of the falls has been closed. Has anyone heard or been up there?

There have been deaths at Cochran Falls. One I think last year.

Cochran Falls is one of the few unspoiled/untouched waterfalls left in Georgia. It's off the beaten path so no tourists. The trail from the top side is unmarked, so no hikers. The trail from the bottom is rugged so no grocery getting SUV soccer moms. It's hard to get to but very much worth the effort.

Haven't heard anything about this closing but it seems like they are closing our forest more and more these days. This is in my back yard so I'd be willing to take a trip up there in the next couple of weeks to check it out. Possibly Sunday or next weekend. Let me know if you want to make a trip of it and well ride out there. If not I am always riding FS roads in the area so I'll get over there soon.

Thanks, FJC5. Would be fun to hook up sometime. We love going through Cohuta and Big Frog. I can't make the next couple of weekends but sure would be a blast.

If you're over that way let me know. :)

You heard right, we were out riding and decided to swing by this morning. We got to the third creek crossing and found it barricaded. Looks like FS added some boulders to the trail along with a huge tree across the path made it impassable. I talked to some people camping at the end of the road and they claimed the road was in such bad shape that you would need a rock crawler to get through if it were open. The best I could tell from walking up there was that they were right. You could park there and walk in, I would guess it would be another 1.5 miles to get to the base of the falls. I may put this on my agenda for this spring sometime when I have a day to burn.

Sorry to bear this news.

Thanks, FJC5. Maybe the road closure will put the waterfall further off the maps and make it more "wild". Like you I'll have to put it on my agenda for another time.

Wish I lived a little closer to the mountains. Gas is getting expensive. :(
