I did Afghanistan 1978-79 before Afghanistan was cool. I'm sure it's different in the present conflict than it was when I was there many moons ago but I actually liked the place. Everybody had TB, it was a dusty cold place most of the time but it had a charm that I found intoxicating. I was in the Navy, and Afghanistan is a long way from blue water but such is the call to serve at times. I wrote the first article on the Taliban in 1985 for SAPRA-India (Strategic And Political Risk Assessment INDIA) that I know of. Again, that was before the Taliban were "cool".

There are a lot of veterans of small wars on the forum who enjoy FJ's.

Re: any combat vets out there????

Sorry, I watched Desert Storm in the Dormitory at Whiteman AFB (with a keg and a bunch of hootin' and hollerin' as the first Sortie of the war came back without a scratch).

Closest I got to combat was cooking for Marines and Army (10th Mountain).

My hat goes off to you all though, who put your butts on the line while schmo's like me drank beer and watched tv.

I was at KFOR Main and Camp Bondsteel, I was there in 04 and afgan in 04 Iraqi was 04 also. I was attached to a close protection team while I was deployed. I was the only Marine that was in my group my main client was a Army General. Hence the reason for being in so many places in the course of a year.

Alright let me know..

bambam, that sounds pretty cool. you got to go all over, and I'm sure being a general security had its perks.

There were plenty of perks one was growing your hair longer so you didn't stick out like a sore thumb when you were in other countries. So no high and tight for a year. Not to mention NATO picking up the bill on almost everything. But there were the bad as well..... But most of you know as vets of wars what I mean.
