My FJ die on me driving home on the freeway from work yesterday. Turns out the fuel float was defective, and it ran out of gas with 1/4 tank reading on the gas gauge. Just lettin everyone know, hopefully a fluke, but who knows.

Re: Defective Fuel Float

How many miles do you have on your FJ now? Since your are the first to state this, it might be just a defective part. I wonder how hard it is to replace the fuel float on the FJ. I've worked on a couple vehicles that were a real pain to change out the float or the fuel pump.

I hope you get your FJ back right away.

Anyone else having this problem?
Re: Defective Fuel Float

My FJ did the same thing last night. Driving down the street, running fine and just stalls.turns over wont start.Gauge read I Had an 8th tank of gas left.No low fuel light, I ran with less gas before with no problems.I have about 3,000 miles on it.Had it towed to the dealer where they told me it was out of gas and needed a new sensor. They had to order it and it would be in next week and that I should keep at least 4th of a tank of gas until they fix it.They also told me Toyota is keeping close tabs on problems with the FJ.

Re: Defective Fuel Float

I'm gonna make this a sticky. It seems this is not an isolated problem. If anyone else has this problem please post it here.
It would be interesting to know what brand, and grade, of gasoline the people who are having this issue are using. I remember two years ago, after the 4 Hurricanes hit here and gas was in major demand, hearing similar fuel float issue stories on many different makes of vehicle. In addition, it would be helpful to know what part of the country anyone who is having the issue is from.

Maybe we'd be able to narrow the problem down to a specific region, grade of fuel, or gasoline company.
I live in Los Angeles,Ca.Use Shell or Chevron gas.Use 89 and 91 octane gas.My gas sensor/float went out at about 3000 miles.Waiting for my dealer to call when they receive replacement.
I'm thinking that if I can't do anything about it...how about a please and thank you shout out to anybody who has experienced this problem with less than a 1/4 tank?(we can fill 'er up more often/no problem if it saves my wife from getting stranded).
search function saves lives indeed. i had the problem today. 4200 miles on my truck. didn't run out of gas but i noticed it for the second time today. it's all in the new thread i started before using the SEARCH function. lol...
I had this problem back in '94 on a Tacoma!
I wounder if it could be related:confused:
I have had my FJ since March 31st, but with only 2100 miles so far. I have only used Premium unleaded with each fill-up, and have had the low fuel light come on about a half-a-dozen times up until now. No problems as of yet with running out, but maybe I haven't driven enough miles yet and/or the use of only 91 octane gas has helped delay or prevent the problem?
This just happened to me also. The fuel gauge was on about 1/8th and I was cruising along on the SF Bay Bridge when it stopped accelerating then then just died. Luckily I was able to roll down the hill and got a gallon from Caltrans driver.
The %^&$ing light never turned on which is my signal to go buy gas.
I have 2680 miles and I use regular 87 octane from Arco, 76 or Chevron.
After fill up it shows as full so it's the light and or sensor.
I'll add it to the list when I take it in for service.
So, I'm driving to work this morning and the FJ just sputters and stalls in the middle of one of the busiest streets in L.A. I look at the gas gauge and it says 1/4 tank. No Gas Light nothing but stalls out as if the FJ ran out of petrol! I get it to a side street, sit and wait (thinking vapor lock or something), try to start it up and it turns over only to sputter and konk out again. I call AAA, they come out, put 2 gallons in and the FJ starts right up! The gas gauge still sits on 1/4 tank but has for some reason not registered the 2 gallons. I go to the nearest gas station, fill the FJ up and the gas gauge rides over to full. I have 3400 miles on the FJ. Run 91/89 oct gas from Shell mostly.

vapor lock?your showing your age dude.
had the same issue only occurred once, working fine after that one occurrence - no problems since, (over 5k miles now) think I will wait until a revised part number for the float or gauge (is there a microprocessor involved?) before I take my FJ (production number aprox 10400) in for the fix. In the meantime I keep a very close eye on the trip odo.

I wish everyone with this problem would include their production # so we could see if there is relevence there. I have not had the problem yet but its not something I want to wait for and I didnt pay for defects (espcially the VERY inconvenient kind). My production # is in the low 20,000.
i've had no problems yet and im at 8000 miles.
